Hey, hey, what do ya say?

The Cubs, they sho ‘nuf won today.  With the Brewers’ subsequent loss, we’ve clinched the division.  Hot damn.  Now it’s time to look to the post-season.  And given the lack of any apparent great teams in the NL this year, hey, we’ve got as good a shot as anyone, I guess.  The Cubs have been a real Jekyll & Hyde team this year, so I guess it depends which team shows up.  The good one, I hope.  Luckily, Zambrano has looked very good his last few starts, and finished the season with 18 wins.

As for facing the best of the American League–we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.  However, Right is on our side, given the AL’s abomination of the Designated Hitter.  Satan just had to do something to mess up baseball, because it’s Man’s greatest accomplishment.

Tough luck for the Brewers–and that’s not meant snidely at all–who spent 133 games in first place this season.  They’re a young team, though, and should just get stronger in the years ahead.  Funny how a division will be bad for so long, and then several teams get stronger all at the same time.  This should be a better division in the immediate future, and see much better ball.  I really do see the Central becoming a real force in the NL for the next several years at least.

As for the Rockies, damn, but they gave it a run.  My hat’s off to them.

But for now, here’s to my Cubbies.   Let’s see how far we can go, boys.  (And don’t you think MLB doesn’t dream of us being in the World Series.  That “One Year Short of a Century” storyline sells itself.)

There’s a slim chance that the Brewers will take the last two from San Diego out of spite, and give the Rockies a last gasp to win their way into the Wild Card, but I’m not counting on it. I expect that by tomorrow night, I’ll be in full “Go Cubs and Indians” mode.

If the playoff picture shapes up the way it looks like it will in the NL, it will actually be an easy year for me, as those two teams will be the only ones in the postseason I don’t hate for one reason or another.

    There was never any doubt!

I’d like to see a Cubs-Indians series, too. I’d be the next best thing to the Cubs-Red Sox series that we were denied in 2003. That would’ve caused the universe to collapse, and I wanted to have some fun with it.

Hey, hey, what do ya say?

Ah, thanks, Ken; now I’ve got that f*!@ing “Spies Like Us” song running through my head. ARGH!

Well, now that the Cubs earned their playoff spot…barely, I hope they make the most of it. Can they scrounge the fortitude they need to win in the playoffs and do what the Cardinals did last year? They’d better.

As for the Brewers, they finally have a winning season after 15 years (yay…it’s been painful), and I’m hoping they can play spoiler to the Padres, just as the Padres did to the Brewers just yesterday.

  • Chris Magyar

Cubs fans need to root for a Brewers win, a Rockies win, a Mets win, and a Phillies win. That would force a four-way tie for the last two playoff spots, necessitating high-pressure games until Wednesday, in which bullpens and starters are burned.

Also, it would be awesome to burn the Snakes again for celebrating on our field a day early because they are apparently unable to count. Dickheads.

  • What a crazy division. Who would have thought that the Cubs would win their division slot on the season’s third to last game, and that they’d then be the League’s *first* team to clinch? Weird. Even today, four teams are fighting for the last two slots.

Chris is right, of course, the current chaos will definately work to our benefit if it continues. In the end though, it depends on which Cubs team shows up, the extremely good one, or the extremely bad one. Will Zambrano be the ace we all dream of him being. We’ll tell.

    Here’s to Wednesday!

Deep breathing. Please let this season go on forever.

Looks like the Cubs get the Dickbacks, which is great for you Ken, because their team has been operating on smoke and mirrors all season long. The Cubbies offense will demolish them. The trick to beating Arizona is good defense.

On the other side of the equation, I’d love the Rox to get a second shot at the Phils. Put this silly Rollins vs. Holliday MVP debate to bed for good.

I agree. I think the Cubs will take out the Silverbacks, no problem.

I just wanna point out that while I’m not a big baseball fan, I AM from Arizona, so… Go DBacks! d-:

  • David

I still have a dog in this fight, so I can’t unreservedly pull for the Cubbies, but I must say as a multi-generation Red Sox fan (it’s in the DNA) I remember exactly how I felt in ’04. I believe that Cubs fans everywhere most definitely desrve to feel the same thing, so I wish you the best of luck.

Actually, so do I. The DBacks already had their turn at bat (ha! I made a funny), so I wouldn’t mind the Cubs beating them to go on to the World Series.

    Ho.

    Ly.

    Cow.

The Cubs deserve much, but I hope the nation doesn’t overlook how Bucky f’n Dent the one-game playoff was, and remember that when (if (when)) the Rox meet the Cubs for the NL pennant. Because these are the sort of miracles baseball is made of.

That was an awesome game last night, no question!

This morning, all the sports radio shows are talking about “He never touched the plate.” **shrug** So what, Barrett never tagged him, either.

  • Chris Magyar

He probably didn’t. But if McClelland called him out, that still would have meant 1st and 3rd with one out and a good fly ball hitter at the plate… I feel secure that the Rox had that game in their destiny, all controversy aside.

Besides, that double was a home run.
