Monster of the Day #956

He’s kicking his ass without even looking at him. That’s cold, brother.

BTW, G-FAN did a nice article this month on the female lead in KING KONG ESCAPES.
She had a good time making this puppy.

  • Eric Hinkle

Ah, KING KONG ESCAPES. If you watch this and then discover it was made as a kid’s film it can be a bit of a surprise given just how brutally Doctor Who (or is it Hu?) gets killed. The guy drowns and is crushed to death at the same time, blood spewing from his mouth and everything!

  • There’s a certain Bad Movie Synergy with this shot, as it almost seems like Kong’s looking at the boat that Rhodes Reason and Linda Miller are escaping in. Not quite–the eyes are a little too high up for that–but it’s a good image nonetheless.

I used to love this movie as a kid, despite frowning at their tarnishing the good Doctor’s name. Last time I watched it, I thought it okay. The plot really doesn’t make much sense (I mean compared to other Toho outings) but the monster fights make up for it. Actually, given a choice between this and any of the straight Kong remakes, I’d pick this one.

  • Oh yeah! And it’s Who; this is loosely based on the King Kong cartoon show. About the only thing they took from the series, as I recall.

  • Eric Hinkle

So he is Who, which I picked first in that list of names.

Does that mean that Who’s on first?

  • bgbear_rnh

He seems to be contemplating “Should I escape? It’s a nice little island. Plenty of food and exercise. There is just something about blonds and landmarks that keeps calling me. sigh.”

  • Flangepart

    Third base!

Am I the only one want’s to see this done with the other Dr. Who? Talk about an interesting take on the whole wee beastie genre. Let The Master take an interest in Kaiju, and it’s just a matter of picking your fav. Dr.

My pick- Tom baker and leela.

  • Eric Hinkle

The other Dr. Who? I don;t give a darn!

Besides, didn’t he confront giant monsters several times in his show?

  • Gamera977

Yeah, several times as I remember. Somehow I see the Third Doctor and U.N.I.T. getting involved here though.

  • Gamera977

I suppose they could import a few blondes. Personally my pick for the stupidest giant monster ever, A*P*E, like most giant gorillas he goes for blondes- so looking for one he invades South Korea….

  • Rock Baker

“A THOUSAND THRILLS AS KING KONG BATTLES THE SERPENT OF MONDO ISLAND!”

This picture is such a delight!

For those interested, I recently posted a pictorial history of Kong over at Baker’s Log, as well as a recent post detailing the adventures of Gamera the flying turtle.

  • bgbear_rnh

Yes, I recall the classic line:
Captain Park: What in heaven’s name brought you to Korea?
A*P*E: My lust. I came to Korea for the blondes.
Captain Park: The blondes? What blondes? We’re in an Asian country
    A*P*E: I was misinformed.

  • Flangepart

The Brigadier: “Right. Bring up the flame throwers.”
The Dr. “They won’t work you know. It’s an utterly alien menace, as usual.”
The B: “I know, but if we don’t try and fail, you’ll never look the genius boffin.”
The Dr. “Really? By now my genius must stretch from here to outer Mongolia…”

  • Eric Hinkle

Wait, this was actual dialogue in the movie?

  • Gamera977

    A*P*E: ‘Whut? This isn’t Sweden?’

  • bgbear_rnh

oh yeah, along with: Of all the banana daiquiri bars, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine.

  • The Rev.

There are slow spots and the protagonists leave me rather cold, but Dr. Who and the monster stuff (outside of that Kong suit) are great. Most importantly, it gave the world Gorosaurus. I kind of wish we’d gotten more movies with Dr. Who trying to use kaiju to further his schemes.

  • zombiewhacker

Wow, all this King Kong Escapes chatter and not ONE mention of Mie Hama? What’s… what’s WRONG with you people?!!!

  • The Rev.

In my defense, it’s been so many years since I’ve seen it that the only humans I remember from that are Dr. Who and the white woman (who was either a terrible character or a terrible actor, because I recall dreading her appearances).
