Stuff…

D Wars, the long awaited Korean dragons-in-the-modern-world flick, is due for a limited American theatrical release next month.  Chances are it will play in a small number of art houses in big cities before being regulated to DVD.  Keep an eye out, though.

In happy news for Killer Croc movie fans (one of the more oft-disappointed demographic groups out there), the Australian flick Rogue is apparently going to get an American theatrical release in November.  For a while there it seemed more likely to go direct to DVD following the poor box office reaction to the apparently awful Primeval earlier this year.   Hopefully this will prove a far better movie—although we’ve had hopes like that before—and moreover hopefully a better movie will draw a bigger audience.  Time will tell.

Meanwhile, although finally canning (again) the would-be giant shark movie Meg, New Lines Cinema is looking at a currently untitled “Shark vs. Croc” film about a flooded Australian town (again with the Aussies) beset by, that’s right, tons of killer sharks and crocs.  Man, that could be a blast.

While we’re in the neighborhood, the New Zealand killer sheep spoof Black Sheep will hit DVD in October, with a typically loaded edition.

Speaking of Meg, both times it nearly got into production, it was tied to the release of a putative giant monster movie blockbuster.  After the TriStar Godzilla (yes, Meg’s been bandied around that long) and then the King Kong remake unperformed, however, the film was moved to the backburner, now apparently for good.  However, if J.J. Abrams apparent giant movie flick, whatever they call it, somehow manages to make major bucks next years, it’s possible the project would be revived.  I mean, this scenario is a stretch, but I think it’s remotely possible.

Creature from Hillbilly Lagoon (click for trailer).  The fact that this has been around since 2005, however, under its original title of Seepage!, doesn’t inspire too many hopes.  Even so, the DVD release will follow closely on the flippers of that for the very similar-seeming Splatter Beach, itself the subject of a two-disc (!) special edition release in October.  Both look gory and spoofy (although hopefully the “Hillbilly Lagoon” bit doesn’t represent the level of the film’s wit), and Creature has an amusingly old school toxic waste thing going that recalls the genre’s classic Horrors of Party Beach.

I’m reasonably confident we’ll get a showing of D-Wars here, since we got The Host. If we do I’ll put a review of it up on the old board like I did with The Host that everyone can ignore. ;)
