Went to see it last night. Good but not great in my opinion. Nothing really wrong with the movie, it was very true to the novel, only being compressed to fit the allotted running time. Card said if they'd thrown everything in the novel in there it'd been a six or so hour miniseries and everyone would have went to sleep. Some stuff was really cut down like Ender's friendship with Bean and they really streamlined his ability to think outside the box and understand that space is a 3D environment and take advantage of his opponents two dimensional thinking.

I dunno, it just seems a little flat though. I think it's that the novel is a very thoughtful work getting inside the heads of Ender and the other characters which you can't really do that well in a movie. Seems way harder to bring a thinking novel to the screen than a shoot-em-up, lots of explosions, action piece. Still a good movie, if you liked the novel you should check it out.

Your point about 'thinking' movies is well taken.
That's what novels and short stories can do. A radio play can make it work, like in an old Detective story.
Visual media? Not so much. Best left as a means of filling out the physical actions of a known story like this, then go read the books to make it a complete work.

Guess I'm just rehashing the old 'the novel is always better' idea. Nevertheless; I picked the Blu-Ray DVD up as soon as it came out.

Best way to deal with the differences, indeed. That could then make a complete experience. Kinda like hot the miniseries BAND OF BROTHERS and THE PACIFIC used the books that inspired them to add to the real stories of the guys who lived them, while allowing us an easier visualization of the physical experience.
Hope that made sense...
