Monster of the Day #708

Man, if the movie had been half as good as the monster suit…

  • Flangepart

Wow. Glad the monster has no ‘naughty bits.’

  • SteveWD

Is that from ‘Peter Benchley’s Creature’? I remember watching that thinking the monster was way too good far a TV movie. I think Stan Winston (or at least his studio) did the suit.

  • The Rev.

I have only seen bits of Creature, although I think you’re right that this is the titular monster from that. If it is, then yes, it was a Stan Winston creation.

  • Gamera977

Ah, thought I’d seen it before, I don’t remember much about the movie though, yeah- pretty dull stuff.

  • SteveWD

I think it suffered from the same problem other ‘monster’ based TV mini-series do (i think ‘Creature’ was a two-parter). Most of it just seems to kill time till the monster really shows up in the final act. Come to think of it, the only other ‘monster’ mini-series I can think of are ‘Something is Out There’ (which also had a pretty cool creature), and ‘Peter Benchley’s The Beast’ which pretty much sucked all around.

  • David Fullam

Boy did television screw up two awesome books by the late Peter Benchley.

  • SteveWD

If ‘Creature’ had been a feature it could have been a tight, gory, awesome little movie with a great monster instead of a bloated, lame, mini-series with a great monster.

  • Ericb

There was Stephen Kings “TheTommyknockers”, which, if I remember correctly, the monsters didn’t really show up until the last 1/2 hour to 20 minutes.

  • Ken_Begg

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking.

  • SteveWD

Oh wow, I didn’t even think of Stephen King adaptions. There’s a whole truckload of made-for-tv disappointment there (with a few exceptions).

  • Cullen Waters

I was never able to finish “Creature”. I did finish “Beast” and thought the miniseries did a better job. Which either tells you what I thought of the source or just how bad my film judgement is. I will accepted either or both answers

  • Rock Baker

“Did you like the part where the shark gorws legs and climbs up on land to have a sword fight with the Sherriff?” (A paraphrase, as now that I’m trying to, I can’t recall the exact quote….)

  • Eric Hinkle

If you check around on the site, I think you may find a few pithy words concerning ‘The Beast’ courtesy of Mister Begg himself.

  • Flangepart

A sword fight? Okay, that could have been interesting. The rest of that…thing…I found less than stellar.

“Wake me when the monster arrives.”
    “Zzzzzzzzzz…”
    “You’re a great help.”

  • Ken_Begg

Actually, Douglas Milroy wrote that seminal Jabootu review.

  • Eric Hinkle

Whoops. Odd to hear that, though, as it ‘felt’ so very much like one of your reviews. Still, thanks for the correction.

  • Sandy Petersen

The Langoliers was such a TITANIC disappointment that it almost wrapped around and became awesome again. What a train wreck.

  • SteveWD

Ain’t it the truth. Sure didn’t help that it came out right after ‘The Stand’. The Langoliers would have made a good episode of Nightmares and Dreamscapes, not a two part mini-series.
