Monster of the Day #611

An earlier version of Westworld, based around a robot modeled on the Yul Brynner of The King and I, didn’t work at all.

I think you did this one already.

‘On the third day of Christmas Jabootu gave to me:
    Three Phantoms Creeping,
    Two Belas laughing,
    And number 512 MotD…’

  • Ken_Begg

I thought so too, although I couldn’t find it in my records. Meh, my goal is less than 1% repeat rate, which for my level of organization is pretty good.

    Also, it’s bitchin’.

How Fortunate, This WIll simplify Everything!

This has got to be one of my favorite lines of all time and I love the Phantom Creeps, just so much going on. Thank you Ford Beebe.

  • Poor robot. The only work he was able to get in the last 10 years was in a Rob Zombie video.

  • SteveWD

The robot face kind of reminds me of the ‘Zardoz’ head. Does anyone know who was inside the robot costume? Even if his head only came up to about mid-nose in the suit, that was one tall dude.

  • Reed

I have not seen this, but now I must track it down! The Phantom Creeps, eh? Also, I can apparently post comments from my phone now where the wok system blocks that.

On a differet topic: Am I the only one who finds the nearly instantaneous arrival and ascendancy of smartphones weird? I know kids who think big screens ar completely unecessary and only watch TV and movies on phones and tablets. I can’t stand these little screens, but they are s damn handy for everything other than watcing shows.

Sorry, don’t know where that little diatribe came from. Get off my lawn!

  • Ericb

    I don’t even have a cell phone.

  • Gamera977

I recently read Vernor Vinge’s ‘Rainbow’s End’ where he has everyone by 2030 wearing contact lenses and computers built into their clothing to have a head’s up display projected over everything. Good book!
Personally I’m waiting to have a computer chip implanted in my brain for 24/7 internet access! Shades of new Dr. Who series where the Cybermen start out as people with cellphones glued to their ears all the time.

  • Nor do I. I have rotary telephones. (I also don’t make enough calls to justify connecting the telephone line, so I effectively don’t have a telephone at all!)

  • It is pretty weird. I remember my peers in school thinking small television screens were a gyp. I always seemed so prehistoric with my 20- inch screen. I guess they still get antsy if you try to show them a black and white image, though….

  • Yeah, but I gotta say the robot’s coolness is somewhat overshadowed by Bela’s EXPLOSIVE PET SPIDERS! Now THAT’s cool!

  • Flangepart

    BOOM!

    “I heard a spider barking…”

“Sorry boss. Had a bean burrito for lunch.”

yeah. A great series for Joel and the Bots to riff on.
