Monster of the Day #586

Kind of a no-brainer after yesterday.

Rock posted the poster art yesterday. Interesting how they sort of make it look like the killer frisbees are organic, toothy flying saucers. And as David F. pointed out, it’s the proto-Predator. Indeed, as all good trivia mavens know, both aliens were played by the same guy, 7’2″ Kevin Michael Peter Hall.

I just saw this for the first time down in Texas, showing Kirk a DVD-R of it I’d bought. It was off the VHS tape, but a pretty good copy. I got it off Halloweenhell on Ioffer, who runs multiple-buy deals (sans art and stuff, but that’s OK). He’s got some good schlock, so you might want to check his wares out. Indeed, maybe before the next fest, we can assemble a list of 20 movies to buy for $100, and split them up down at Sandy’s or something.

Good movie, though. Copious amounts of ham are provided by Jack Palance (same year as Hawk the Slayer) and Martin Landau (as a crazy vet–innovation!), who would reteam a few years afterward in the very rare slasher movie I like, After Dark.  Also on hand are a young David Caruso–no sunglasses, alas–and more veteran actors, such as Sue Ane Langdon, Neville Brand, Ralph Meeker, Cameron Mitchell and Larry Storch (!!).

The video box blurb should read “Staring Academy Awards winners Jack Palance and Martin Landau!”

Wow, whata cast! Now I have to see this…

  • Ken_Begg

Oops, dammit, the site crashed on me when I was writing this, and clearly didn’t save the entire thing. Thanks for catching that.

Zombies? Nooooooo! My brains, my poor, poor brains!…

  • I really like this film. Pretty amazing cast for a B, and some really nice atmosphere. Glad you chose the picture you did. I thought that was an impressive reveal for the movie’s creature.

  • Beckoning Chasm

Kevin Peter Hall, I think. You’re thinking of Anthony Michael Hall, who was a different monster.

  • Beckoning Chasm

I believe you can see the entire thing on YouTube.

Thanks BC, will give it a look!

  • There might be some good news coming up…
Shout Factory’s horror division Scream Factory cut a deal with MGM (who owns Without Warning) to release some of their movies on DVD and Blu. This Friday night, Scream Factory is going to announce a bunch of upcoming titles, and Without Warning is one of the odds on favorites to be announced. They’ll post the titles, as they have been so far, on the Scream Factory Facebook page.

  • It’s sort of like seeing SON OF THE BLOB done right!

I think this view of the creature was only for a split second in the film. Nice to have a chance to drink in the details.

  • Hot Dog! If true, I know what I want for Christmas!
