Monster of the Day #563

“Quick, Harry, the Space Flit!”

  • Hope the Wiirn come back to the show one day.

  • Gamera977

    The Wirrn has turned!!!

    Yeah, they were cool monsters.

  • Flangepart

With better animation. I could just imagine the guy pushing the ‘bug trolly’ below camera view.

  • Toby Clark

If it helps, they’ve been in two Big Finish audio adventures.

  • KeithB

    Flit jokes never get old.

“Please remove your exoskeleton and put on this robe and the doctor will be in in just a minute”

  • I’ll reiterate what I said yesterday: I love this story. I love the Wirrn. I also love the fact this isn’t the worst F/X Doctor Who had.

  • GalaxyJane

That (dis)honor might belong to the show’s other anthropomorphic insects, the Zarbi. Or maybe not, there were a few real stinkers over the years, though as I was there for the stories instead of the monsters, I never really worried about it much.
Then again, compared to my *other* favorite 70s Brit SF show as a kid, “The Tomorrow People” Doctor Who’s effects were “Star Wars” quality.

  • Marsden

Will we get a Cyberman soon, or a Sontaran, they were up next.
    How about Harry?

  • Actually, the story I had in mind was Invasion of the Dinosaurs. The Zarbi look pretty good in comparison. Which, now that I’ve written that, isn’t saying very much at all.

  • fish eye no miko

How about the Myrka from “Warriors of the Deep”?

  • GalaxyJane

The bubble-wrap blobs from “The Three Doctors” were pretty crap too, though I love the ep. I’m not sure I could pick a winner for Goofiest Classic Who monster, I’m spoiled for choice.

  • It might be easier to list the good monsters than the bad. :-)

Both the Myrka and the blobs were terrible, but neither looked like… well… toys. Toys and malformed puppets. Which was the case with
    Invasion of the Dinosaurs.

  • Gamera977

I dunno, I think in some cases the worse the monster the more I love it! Still always struck me how they’d have a monster as awesome as the Zygons and something as awful as the Loch Ness monster hand puppet in the same episode!
