Monster of the Day #462

Man, I love me some blob monsters.

The white dome on top of the monster is actually as eye, as seen below.

  • Ericb

This thing scared the hell out of me when I was a kid.  And though it freaked me out as a kid this beastie did give the Odious Comic Relief his just deserts. They jsut don’t make them like this any more.

  • Flangepart

    “Here comes the killer jello!”
Yeah. This whole flick is the fun. Ya knw…if you watch it with different colored shade, you could change the color wash for ever viewing. Mixing primary colors, don’t cha know.

  • That’s a very red movie right there.  Very red indeed.

  • Beckoning Chasm

I’m with Ericb, this thing utterly terrified me as a kid.

By the way, Ken, you should point out that the eye pictured above ROTATES rapidly, like those of a cartoon character after a substantial punch in the face.

  • Gamera977

    Ahhhh, the shoggoths of Mars!!!

  • Ericb

And that the rotating version  eye doesn’t resemble in the slightest the eye as it appears in the other model of the creature.

  • Ericb

Unless it had two eyes and the other one lay flat on the main body of the creature.

    Ya Know…

I never got this movie. The Martians seem to be incensed by the fact humans are too agressive and barbaric to reach for the stars.

But give the first expidition a break. They were under attack almost from day one.

Have the Martians evolved to a point were “Self-Defense” is a quaint concept?

  • Ken_Begg

    Well, Britain has.

  • I read an Ib Melchior interview once. He absolutely hated this thing. I think the story goes that he checked in with the effects department and they presented him with the giant amoeba. Melchior was embarrassed by the thing, but the effects guys were really proud of themselves. Then they gave him a “wait til you see this”  kind of moment and they turned on the rotating eye. I’m not sure what Melchior told them, but I think he bit his tongue and hoped for the best, and never felt he got it. In his script, the creature was more of a shapeless mass that you could see through.

  • Beckoning Chasm

I read in “Keep Watching The Skies!” that the script described the eye as “turret-like” and that’s why the effects folks made it the way it is.

  • Petoht

Well, it’s the red planet, so… ya know…

But yeah, it got kind of hard on the eyes after awhile.  Still, great little flick.

  •  It’s been years since I’ve seen it.  I didn’t remember it being so very; maybe what I watched wasn’t as high a quality print as this.

  • Petoht

Yeah, the planet scenes are really, really red.  Probably to hide the fact that most everything’s cardboard.
