Rock Baker on Rondo Awards…

From FoJ and contributor Rock Baker:

I thought I’d let you know the ballot is out for this year’s Rondo Awards, and you might want to spread the word around the rest of the crowd. My personal connection to this year’s ballot is that ATTACK OF THE OCTOPUS PEOPLE has been nominated, and I feel partly responsible for that since I helped Josh find his distributor. Also, there’s a G-Fan video nominated as best short which features the Godzilla suits that my Pop and Brother made! (I’m not putting in a plug, but I am excited about that!) Anyway, the Rondos operate on voting obtained by word of mouth, so I’m helping spread the word.”

Rock had sent me a copy of Attack of the Octopus People, and it’s pretty good. Don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely a micro-budgeted, shot on video DIY fan movie, if you go in expecting a professional film you won’t get one. However, it’s pretty impressive indeed for something made by a 16 year-old, and it’s clear the guy knows his old monster movies.

I noted the movie has gotten an Alpha DVD release, and you can check out their page here. So congrats to all involved on that. (In the best tradition of exploitation films, the poster art promises *way* more thant he film itself can hope to deliver.) Here’s a link to the film’s trailer on YouTube.

At the risk of the muddying the waters, I can only note also that the wonderful Lovecraft film (which our own Sandy Petersen invested in) Whisperer in the Darkness is also up for best feature. If you haven’t gotten the incredible DVD yet, it’s a must buy.

Here’s the Godzilla short Rock alluded to (Holy crow!):

Good luck, Rock!

I’d post the link but apparently there are problems doing that in comments? There’s a link to the Godzilla video on the Rondo ballot. Or you can do a youtube search for videos by rockstarbd82.

Yeah, the posting links thing is a pain (not as much pain as being hacked, though.) I’ll post the link in the article. Thanks!

  • Oh, yeah, I had overlooked Sandy’s film also being on the list…. At any rate, I’m pretty happy for Josh to get a nomination. I don’t know what kind of doors a Rondo nod would open, but it’ll look good on the jacket for his next film (which looks like it will be the Rock Baker-scripted VOYAGE TO THE PLANET OF TEENAGE CAVE-WOMEN). ATTACK OF THE OCTOPUS PEOPLE is pretty crude, but the raw talent there makes me anxious to see what Josh will do with a budget.

  • Speaking of the cover/poster for ATTACK OF THE OCTOPUS PEOPLE, I (and inker Jeff Austin and colorist Kevin Thompson) had created a more original (if comic-booky) image for Alpha’s use, but unfortunately we couldn’t get it into Alpha’s hands in time. Sort of a lose-lose too, since Alpha, by not using our cover, also lost some glowing quotes from Bob Burns and Larry Blamire. Oh well.

Considering the source, not bad! Fun piece of stuff I’d expect to see in a good Horror Host show.
