Uh oh!

According to the March 25 issue of Entertainment Weekly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon, who is doing the upcoming Wonder Woman movie, “says his Amazon will not, repeat not, wear “star spangled panties.”

As has, you know, the character in her comic books over the last sixty years.

    I dunno, all of my friends say that Joss Wheadon is the second coming of Christ, but I don’t really see it. I didn’t really like any of the incarnations of Buffy and my reaction towards Firefly was a resounding “Meh.” But I’ll probably see Wonder Woman because I like boobies a lot.

    I don’t know. A character’s costume is often one of their most elemental features, and hearing it’s going to changed all makes me suspicious.

    That’s not always true, as with the X-Men (not a group with consistent costuming), but Wonder Woman’s costume has been the same for nearly the entire run of her appearances, and anything that smells of change for change’s sake gets my ‘uh-oh’ alarm buzzing.

    Ah, good old Joss Whedon. He was lucky with Buffy, and had mixed reviews on Angel and Firefly. I wonder if the “no star spangled panties” is more of Joss giving us “what we need” (an old quote about not doing what the fans think they want). But yeah, seeing as that’s her costume, and the image EVERYONE has of her from either classic Lynda Carter or most comics, he might be killing off some of his goodwill prematurely. What a shock :)

  • Why is it in this country that everyone either has to be some form of dogmatic puritan? Because everyone knows that this is nothing more than Mr. Whedon being a politically correct prig.

    Well, I must admit, from a strictly functional standpoint, Wonder Woman’s outfit didn’t look too practical for fighting in, not to mention a little chilly if the weather got cold. And, since she’s not an American by birth, the fact that her costume looks like it was sewn out of one complete version of Old Glory always puzzled me.

    If the costume designers could come up with something that kept the general look/feel of the classic costume, while being more understandable as a fighter’s togs, I could live with it. I just don’t want it changed to “the latest thing” which will look even sillier when that style dies, as they all do.
