DVDs this Week (07/12/11)…

Fire up those Netflix lists:

Robot Chicken Star Wars Special III Man, these are always good.

Doctor Who The Awakening A Peter Davison story.

On DVD and Blu Ray this Week: Damnation Alley, Battle Beyond the Stars

Delinquent Girl Bosses Collection: A pair of ‘70s Pinky Violence Japxploitation flicks.

Dinocroc vs. Supergator The essential Scott Foy gave this two and a half stars, which isn’t bad for one of these.

The phenomenally successful ghost story Insidious hits DVD and Blu Ray.

The Roger Corman Women in Prison triple pack features Chained Heat, Red Heat and Jungle Warriors.
Maneater (with Dean Cain) Monster flick that from the trailer suggests they were maybe going for a Pumpkinhead vibe.

Minty the Assassin The most refreshing killer of them all! Fight sound effects apparently provided by the Three Stooges. Oh, and I guess it has monsters in it too. I don’t know, how often do these purposeful ‘cult’ movies ever work?

Rec 2 The sequel to the remake.

Wisconsin Project X Looks like one of those faux ’70s Grindhouse sort of deals, this one with (maybe) zombies.

Yay! Have been waiting for the Blu-Ray of ‘Damnation Alley’! I’ve been watching a lot of the A-Team and Airwolf on DVD and how can I resist a movie with George Peppard and Jan-Micheal Vincent!?! And ‘Battle Beyond the Stars’ with Peppard as the space cowboy- gotta pick this up too. Loved both movies as a kid but haven’t seen either in years.

  • The Spanish version of Rec 2 was surprisingly good I felt. They managed to NOT do the same movie all over again, even though it took place in the exact same building. They managed to unveil some of the mysteries that came up during the end of the first movie, and yet they added more mysteries, sort of. They kept it reasonably scary. All in all, as good a sequel as I would have expected.

There’s an American sequel too? Is it a a sequel to the American film, or is it a remake of teh Spanish one?

Foywonder was more generous to DvS than I was. I thought it was pretty crappy. Of course, I was kinder to Swamp Shark than he was, so I guess it balances out?

I need to see Rec one of these days…

  • Sandy — Oops, you’re right, I was conflating [Rec] with Quarantine. There is a DTV sequel called Quarantine 2, but it seems to involve an airplane and isn’t due out on DVD until August.

  • The Rev.

I’m glad that got cleared up, as I was confused.

Having seen both [Rec] and [Rec] 2, I thought the sequel was definitely the better film. The first one was a very well-executed kill-em-off flick, but not a great deal more than that (though it certainly hinted at much more). The second, as Sandy said, revealed a lot of what had been hinted at in the first film…which was more or less exactly what I thought it would have to be, and yet seeing it was so much worse.

Frankly, the best part of both movies was the end of the second one, which took place in chronological terms right at the end of the first [Rec], and which contained the one piece of information that a) would have made watching the second movie a waste of time if revealed any earlier and b) forced you to re-evaluate what had been happening the entire time. Again, not that there weren’t a few hints…

I wonder why IMDB stopped doing this same kind of list.

  • Maybe they haven’t but you just can’t find it because of their moronic new design…

  • Rock Baker

Damantion Alley! About time! Pop’s been wanting to see a scope print of that one for years now! I can’t wait to let him know its finally on the market!

DAMNATION ALLEY is another case of a good book being turned into a really crappy movie. Hell Tanner was role just made for William Smith. They had to cast wimpy Jan-Michael Vincent. I remember being really disappointed when the Giant Cockroaches appeared. They were just large cockroaches. If you say Giant Cockroach, I expect them to be six feet tall,at least, like the ants in THEM !

  • BeckoningChasm

Maybe they haven’t but you just can’t find it because of their moronic new design…

BTW, if you go to a film and click on “Full Cast and Crew” you get the old, well-designed page without having to register and log in.
