John Cleese risks life with brave political observation…

Variety.com reports on the reunion of the remaining living members of Monty Python at the recent broadway premiere of Spamalot, the musical adaptation of their classic comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail. John Cleese sagely noted, “I’m a bit surprised this kind of thing can happen in George W. Bush’s America – you know, people being very naughty, very funny and with a kind of gentle joy.”

Indeed, with the Bush administration having recently outlawed naughtiness, humor and gentle joy via an obscure passage of the Patriot Act, it’s an apt remark. Mr. Cleese will be missed, as he has no doubt by now been murdered by Mr. Bush’s storm troopers in retaliation for his penetrating insight, or at the very least dragged off to one of the horrifying gulugs now dotting the country.

  • People like you or John Cleese wouldn’t have the stones to stand up to a bully either. You’d make a glib remark and run away scared. Nothing brave about you two.

  • Huh?

Ken, I think the above poster just had a wee problem with his irony detector. Or else he’s out to insult all gradients of the political spectrum at the same time.

  • Yeah. That comment made no sense to me, either. Unless, he’s talking about Cleese living in England… then maybe…

No. I still don’t get it.

  • I’m not even sure that his ‘you’ is supposed to be me. I assume so, but the comment makes so little sense that I still can’t be sure.

Normally I’d take a gentle joy in something like that, but, well, you know…

  • Cleese’s comment is kind of sad. He used to be quite full of common sense; I suppose he’s trying to get cast in more movies….

  • I can’t stand the phrase So-And-So’s America. Since when did presidents get the deed to the country? If this is George W. Bush’s America, he’s sure doing a poor job of managing the dissenters, eh? But that’s Ken’s point.

My point is that I hear this all the time down here in Australia. “I can’t believe Team America came out during Bush’s presidency,” and statements of the like. At first I was shocked at their naivetee, then I realized that the Australian government reserves the power to not only rate, but ban films, books, plays, television shows, and advertisements. (And, gee, so does Britain’s.)

Say what they will about the horrors of living in Bush’s Amerikkka, at least we haven’t sacrificed our art to the almighty altar of government.

  • It just goes to show you that idiocy is independent of intelligence. Cleese is a very smart guy, and he’s a complete idiot.
