RIP William Campbell

Roger H mentioned this; I hadn’t heard about it. Busy character actor William Campbell passed away on April 28th. Mr. Campbell achieved a particularly nerdy sort of immortality by playing two memorable Trek baddies, the juvenile but godlike Trelane, and the Klingon Koloth in the classic Trek episode The Trouble with Tribbles, a role he reprised decades later on an episode of Deep Space Nine. He also worked for Roger Corman, starring in films like Dementia 13, The Secret Invasion and Blood Bath. Perhaps the high point of his career was when he co-starred in his own TV show, 1958’s Cannonball.

Like many such actors, Mr. Campbell eventually slid into a comfortable career of mostly TV guest appearances and B movie work. It’s those Star Trek episodes he’ll always be remembered for, however. Rest in Peace, sir.

I saw a film Campbell starred in where he played the “Red-light Bandit” and I was surprised that back in the 50s there was already people sympathetic to psychopathic Caryl Chessman. I thought it took an over-the-top Alan Alda TV movie to do that.

(OK, I’ll look it up “Cell 2455 Death Row” 1955. Alda film was “Kill Me If You Can” 1977)

  • A truly recognizable face from a number of different roles. Rest in Peace…

  • Mr. Rational

Who will mind Gothos, now that the Squire is gone? Sad day.

  • Rock Baker

    Rest In Peace, Sir.

  • Ken-

Tribbles may not have liked you, Koloth, but we did.

    RIP.

  • The Rev.

    Rest well, sir.

In related news, I just saw that Jackie Cooper passed away. He was in the “Our Gang” series as a child, and later won Emmys for his behind-the-scenes work at “M*A*S*H” and “The White Shadow.” He also played Perry White in the Superman films. He was 88.
