Monster of the Day #134

Not much chance of statutory rape with this one.

  • The Rev.

    ………Did Ken just make a rape joke?………

I am so proud right now. Your journey to the dark side is complete.

As for the MotD, this is one of the best scenes in the Harryhausen Sinbad movies. What an incredibly complicated monster to animate and choreograph with, and it turns out so well. Great choice.

  • No! I was honoring Kali as a fully empowered, self-actuated Womyn who is no man’s plaything. Why does that scare you so much, Rev? Why?

  • BobTanaka

Well, actually she only comes to life at the command of a man, dances for him at his command, and tries to kill Sinbad at his behest, besides being defeated by another man, so don’t know if I’d call her “fully empowered.” If anything she shows that even a ten-foot, six-armed, sword-wielding woman of stone must obey her patriarchal oppressors.

  • The Rev.

Why are YOU so scared to admit that you are ready to take your place in the dark army?

It’s not actuating or empowerment that’s scary, it’s the whole “murderous stone statue with six scimitars” thing.

  • Bob, that’s just what she *wants* him to think.

  • Rev, just for clarification, I checked with Whoopi and she confirmed it wouldn’t be ‘rape-rape.’

  • Elizabeth

And THIS is how Temple of Doom should have ended.

  • Not to mention A Room With A View!

  • Ericb

and The Bridges of Madison County.

  • Ericb

Oops, sorry for the redunant joke. I wasn’t familiar with Room with a View and somehow conflated it in my my with Rear Window.

  • David Fullam

One of my favorite Harryhausen creations.

  • Frank

That pic alone is more entertaining than the entire most recent Indiana Jones film.

  • zombiewhacker

TGVOS dates terribly today but that sequence does not. Possibly my fave Harryhausen moment.

  • fish eye no miko

    tatutory rape

I see what you did there…

  • BeckoningChasm

Yeah, fish eye, I suspect he was plastered when he carved out that pun.

  • fish eye no miko

BeckoningChasm said: “Yeah, fish eye, I suspect he was plastered when he carved out that pun.”

True… Still, you gotta give him a hand, that was a very sharp joke.

  • P Stroud

I think you guys are onto something. Almost any movie can be improved with the addition of a “murderous stone statue with six scimitars”. Especially any Lifetime movie. Or reality shows. Imagine a new way of “voting” people off.

  • The Rev.

I’d actually watch those shows with people who are only famous for being on said shows if Kali showed up and killed them all.

Let’s start with the Kardashians, move up to the five hundred “Real Housewives…” shows, and then Spencer and Heidi. (I don’t think they have a show right now, but they really need to die.)
