Kevin McCarthy RIP

Kevin McCarty passed on Saturday, taking another chuck of our film history with him.  Mr. McCarthy has been a workhorse character actor for decades, but is undoubtedly best remembered as the star of the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers, standing on a crowded highway and yelling at the passing cars, “You’re next!” I most recently watched him chewing the scenery with great panache as the villain in Weird Al’s UHF at a midnight screening earlier this year.

Although I never saw him personally, Mr. McCarthy worked the convention circuit pretty heavily, and apparently was an extremely pleasant and gracious fellow who enjoyed interacting with his fans. Certainly there are worse epitaphs than that.  RIP

Wow. It was only last week that I watched Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and while I didn’t find it quite as scary as the 1978 remake I couldn’t fault it or McCarthy’s performance.

And mentions of UHF might be tongue-in-cheek, but he was freaking awesome in that movie. No scenery was safe and it was wonderful.

If he would have been named *Charles* McCarthy, the typo would have been a brilliant pun. Save it for next time.
