Rock Baker mentioned this movie…

It’s a Japanese flick from 1968 called (here, obviously) Genocide, War of the Insects. I guess I’m kind of weird, but I’d much rather pay ten bucks to see this in a theater than the new Elm Street remake.

  • I am normally up for any movie about how our noble insect brothers can overthrow the oppressive hand of Man, but this one does look mightily craptastic. At least it makes a cogent point about the horrors of nuclear … wait.

Man I can find NOTHING about this film on the internetz. Amazing.

  • I’ve seen this movie. Cinematic Titanic riffed it when they came through St Louis last November. It is as stupid as it looks.

  • Charles Goodwin

Sandy, I managed to find some references to the film by using the film’s original Japanese title Konchu daisenso… and it shows up on the Internet Movie Database as Genocide.

Nothing too detailed, nor very complimentary, I’m afraid, though there was one German website that gave it a somewhat positive review (I think, my German is not what it used to be). Actually it seemed to be damning with faint praise, now that I think about it.

  • David Fullam

Always heard about this film, but never seen it. Japanese, 1960s, sounds like it’s my kind of film.

  • It sounds like it’s no MATANGO or GOKE, though. Alas.

  • Rock Baker

If I could find another Japanese flick to compare it to, it might be The “Legend of Dinosaurs” since both are about the same on logic and the basic ability to tell a story. Both are still terrific fun though if you have a taste for oddball movies.

  • Video Daikaiju used to have the Japanese-language version for sale. I think my friend almost bought it on a number of occasions.

  • Eric Hinkle

This is probably entirely too late for this, but at Barnes and Noble the Criterion Collection movies are on sale for 50% off, more with a membership. And this film, together with THE X FROM OUTER SPACE, GOKE: BODY SNATCHER FROM HELL, and THE LIVING SKELETON is available on the WHEN HORROR CAME TO SHOCHIKU collection for about $30 right now,

  • The film’s also on Hulu. I checked it out Halloween week. It’s… interesting?

  • Eric Hinkle

Thanks, but I don’t get Hulu.

Most of the movies I listed seem to be available as free uploads over on YouTube.

  • Oh, I’ve gone that route myself more than a time or two. A lot of movies there you can’t get via Hulu or Netflix.
