Weird casting decision of the week…

In a presumed attempt to boast low ratings, UPN’s well-regarded teen detective series Veronica Mars is, according to the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, adding Steve Guttenberg (!) to the cast for its second season.

Steve Guttenberg?! I don’t know what sort of demographic they are hoping to tap into, but good luck to them.

  • I just hope Steve remembers to thank the Stonecutters for this great opportunity.

I don’t think Steve Gutenberg is that bad a choice. The guy is a decent actor, but not so full of himself that he thinks he’s an especially good one. I’ve seen a few of his recent films (not by choice most of the time) and he does his best even when the rest of the show is garbage. My impression was that he knew he didn’t really deserve to be in better and was making the most of what he had.

I think Charisma Carpenter was added as a “twentysomething” character to appeal to the “twentysomething” audience (never mind that CC is in her thirties) and Steve Guttenberg’s addition is just another new character. I think it will be his character’s daughter who will be more of an addition that is designed to bring in more female viewers of “America’s Next Top Model.”
