Kudos to Mythbusters…

Long-time readers will know that one of the few shows I actually watch on TV (as opposed to catching on DVD when season sets come out) is Mythbusters.

One beloved elements on the show has been blowing crap up, but lately the program has been leaning on this crutch a bit too heavily. Last year (?) I remember they did the “biggest explosion ever” on the show, something like 5,000 lbs of high explosives, and…it was pretty dull. There was an explosion in a quarry or something, but little sense of scale to really make you feel how big it was. I still think the show’s best explosion was when they atomized a concrete-mixing truck. THAT you had an idea of the scale of.

I think the guys on the show must have figured this out, because this season they are doing less explosions. I mean, where can you really go with that? That doesn’t mean you forgo such stuff entirely, because nobody wants that. Last week’s show was a perfect example, however, as it was all myths about duct tape. This featured two great stunts. Jamie and Adam built a boat entirely out of duct tape, including the sail and the keel. There was a steel frame and a rod to hold up the sail, but otherwise it was all duct tape. And it worked! It looked entirely cool.

Meanwhile, the B Team made up…a duct tape cannon. The biggest problem was keeping it from warping before they got the cannonball in there, but they managed to shoot several shots, and it was really, really cool.

Good to see the show back to its peak. Last year’s phonebook friction myth is still the single best thing I’ve seen them do on the show, and nothing at all exploded.

By the way, Kari is getting huge as the latest episodes progress. I wonder when she had her baby–surely there’s some post-production time and she had her kid by now. How long until the show is inspired to do some baby myths? I hope she’s not shy about bringing her baby on the show (when appropriate, of course).

She had the baby back in June, the 28th. (Thanks, Wikipedia)

The telephone book stunt had TANKS! They didn’t need to blow anything up!

This week’s episode was also explosion free. It was about fuel efficiency in clean vs. dirty cars, and a test of “Beer after liquor, never sicker”; i.e., will your hangover be worse with just beer, or with beer + other types of alcohol (supposedly, sticking with just beer will give you less of a hangover). It was a pretty neat episode.
And I agree, explosions are nice, but if they do them too often, they just become dull.

Psssht! You all are crazy! Explosions are awesome, the bigger the better, and they never ever get old!

Last year’s phonebook friction myth is still the single best thing I’ve seen them do on the show…

Did you miss the lead balloon??

I’m with you 100%. They almost lost me last season. Now they seem to be getting back to “sciency” stuff, at least somewhat. I like a big boom as much as anyone but I definitely geek out on brain work and gadgets more. Otherwise, I’d watch Brainiacs.

I think the Pykrete episode was interesting. But maybe because I knew about the pykrete story back in middle school when I read one of those “Strange…but true” books.

The most awesome explosion they did was when they lit up some milk creamer. Not only did they have the scale just right by putting the camera right behind the Mythbusters gang. But the resulting explosion was more of a fireball. That was more interesting than the usual puff of smoke that results from a regular explosion.

  • BAYSPLOSIONS!!!!

  • I think Mythbusters is at its best when the result they get is totally unexpected. The phone book thing was the best in that regard. I never would have guess in a million years that two cars would not be able to pull two phone books apart.

I must admit that I do have a special place in my heart for the “you can’t polish a turd” episode. I think mostly just because only the Mythbusters would look at that phrase and say, ‘hey, we really should try that out!’. And then find a way to actually do it!

I agree with the comments about the explosions. I like the explosions. But they need to have a point. I think last season they were getting close to the point of blowing things up just for the sake of blowing things up.

I have to think that the catastrophic utter fail embodied by terrible shows like “Smash Lab” helped steer the Busters back in the correct direction. Now all we have to do is convince them that the build team are not funny. Just do the science, kids. If anyone has to talk, let it be Kari. (MMMmmmmm… Kari…- sorry, little geek out there)

  • Yes, or when they were flabbergasted to learn that elephants really were afraid of mice (or at least visibly shied from them). That was hilarious.

  • The Rev. D.D.

    They did!?

Oh man, I have to see that one. That’s crazy.
