Halloween movies at the Portage…

My friends are running a five day marathon of horror movies at Chicago’s Portage Theater in the week leading up to Halloween. Here’s the line-up.

Monday, Oct 26th
The Birds 7:00
Psycho 9:15

Tuesday Oct 27th
They Live 7:15
The Thing (Carpenter’s; the other is The Thing from Another World) 9:00

Wednesday Oct 28th
Dr. Giggles 7:15
Halloween 2 9:00

Thursday Oct 29th
Childs Play 2 7:15
Phantasm 2 8:50

And the grand finale, staring early on Friday, Oct 30th
King Kong vs. Godzilla 4:30
House of Dracula 6:45
Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man 8:15
Jaws 2 10:30

Anyway wanting further details on the theater, must ask. If anyone’s in town and would want to meet up for a show or two (except for Wednesday; not my bag), let me know.

  • Not-So-Great Cthulhu

You, sir, are a fortunate man to have a theater showing this stuff in your area. Well, okay, they’re showing Dr. Giggles, Halloween 2 and Jaws 2 in there, so maybe not that lucky.

Bank of America Cinema’s also got a nice double feature on Halloween night: The Black Cat (1934) and Black Moon, a Roy William Neill-directed voodoo film with Fay Wray that I’ve never seen. I’ll definitely be there.

And Facets is doing midnight horror films every weekend in October on Friday and Saturday nights. This weekend they’re running The Mummy and Cat People.

  • I wish there were theatres in my area that did things like this. Unfortunately, I can’t justify the gas and lodging to come settle in for a few days there.

  • Honestly, I’d rather watch Jaws: the Revenge in a theater than Jaws 2. I’ll be coming for the rest of the movies that night (great line-up!), so we’ll see if I can rouse the lack of energy to spend another two-plus hours in my theater seats.

The Bank of America theater is, ironically enough, literally right across the street from the Portage. It’s like a two minute walk.

Jason notes the double bill BoA will be showing, but there will also be a horror themed burlesque show (!) playing at the Portage that night.

I’ve written before about my lifetime’s worth of frustration about how smaller towns like Milwaukee and Columbus OH had vibrant genre revival showings, and we got squat. Now things are exploding here. At least one suburban theater is doing Halloween movies that week, the Music Box will host their next 24 Halloween fest mid-month, and right by me we’ll be having a horror con with Tony Todd and pretty much the entire case of Near Dark in attendence, including Lance “The Man” Henriksen.

I’ll do a more elaborate post on all this as info comes in.

If anyone does come into town, let us know and we’ll try to provide free if extremely crappy accomodations for you.

  • Milwaukee? Where would these be happening? Haven’t heard about anything like this around there. Unfortunately, everything I hear of is in Chi-town and outlying provinces.

  • Ironic! The Times Cinema in Milwaukee showed old Universal horror movies around Halloween back when it was a revival house–it looks like it’s since gone first run. I and some friends from the library actually drove up there a couple of years to see Creature of the Black Lagoon and Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, because such fare was not to be found in Chicago. This had to be five years ago, tops.
