Thor is cast…

It’s Australian actor Chris Hemsworth. I’m not familiar with him, but I guess he briefly appears as Kirk’s father in the new Star Trek movie. He’s a healthy six foot three, but I wonder if (kinda hope, actually) if they’ll use computer effects to bump him up more to the seven foot range, in the same fashion as they do with Robbie Coltrane in the Harry Potter films.

Fans (you know the ones I mean) are already complaining that he’s too skinny. Because it’s harder to gain muscle mass than acting talent, I guess.

Hemsworth will also be assaying the Patrick Swayze part (!) in the upcoming Red Dawn remake, so I guess we can assume the Wolverines won’t be high school students anymore.

They’re remaking Red Dawn? Well, we’ll see how those dirty commies stand up to a school filled with students with razor sharp adamantium claws!

I desperately want Thor to not suck. I don’t have much hope, but I would love a not-sucky Thor.

  • JJ

Actually, Swayze was 31 when they were filming Red Dawn, so it’s keeping in tradition.

  • Ha, you got me there!

  • Marsden

“I desperately want Thor to not suck. I don’t have much hope, but I would love a not-sucky Thor.”

Quoted for truth. I can hope, but I fear they are false hopes.

Fans are already complaining that he’s too skinny.

Didn’t they do this with Tobey McGuire regarding Spider-Man, too? And look how that turned out. Honestly…

fans complained about robert downey jr when he got cast in iron man. they also complained about michael keaton as batman, and I’m of the school that he made a great batman.
I also remember fans being happy arnold was cast as mr. freeze.
fanboys will always think they know everything.
I’m going to go on record saying I don’t think thor will suck. I have enough faith in ken branagh’s acumen.

Chris Hemsworth starred on an Australian soap opera, Home and Away, for three and a half years. He’s a good actor, although I liked him better in his ten-minute appearance as Kirk’s dad than in any of his stories on HAA.
I’m not that familiar with Thor, but I’m sure I’m going to want to see this, because I love almost all of the recent Marvel adaptations that I’ve seen.

  • Nicole

They’re doing a remake of Red Dawn!? Sacrilege! That was one of my very first favorite movies as a kid. (In my defense, it was the 80’s and we thought the Reds were going to nuke us at any moment.)

  • Okay guys put your money where your mouth is. I will wager a steak dinner with anyone willing to take my bet that Thor will, in fact, be sucktastic. Here are the terms.

    1) to collect, you must come to Dallas, or I must come to your town. (T-fest would be a good time to visit Dallas, incidentally.)

    2) To be non-sucky, THOR must be at least as well-considered as IRON MAN (which I personally disliked, but the fan community hath spoken).

    3) To be sucky, THOR must be as crappy as FANTASTIC FOUR (if it’s as bad as DAREDEVIL or CATWOMAN, I’ll have hit a home run, so to speak).

    4) If THOR is between this spread, the bet will be considered to be off, as THOR was only mediocre and thus uninteresting to pay off on.

    5) Ken of Jabootu will be adjudgicator of who wins and who pays and who is in this deal.

  • “Didn’t they do this with Tobey McGuire regarding Spider-Man, too?”

A little, but those fans are complete morons. Spider-Man is *supposed* to be skinny. He’s like a 16 year old nerd.

A better comparison were the similar complaints about Christopher Reeve when he was cast in Superman. Turns out you can actually hit the gym and bulk up. I imagine Hemsworth will as well, although I’m not sure Thor needs to be wrestler-huge. And again, I’d use CGI to blow him up to the 7 foot range anyway. Cap about 6′ 4″, Thor about 7′, Hulk about 10′.

  • David Fullam

I so seriously cannot wait for this, Thor was always a favorite. Bring on Cap and the Avengers. Make mine Marvel!!!

  • Re: Sandy’s wager, Thor does come out on June 17, 2011, so T-Fest might well be occurring right around then, or shortly after.

  • Toby

Ken, now that you’ve seen Chris in Star Trek (however briefly) what were your thoughts?

  • Chris Pine was fine; certainly he didn’t call attention to himself. Once I got past the unlikeliness of a bunch of apparent 20 year-olds being put in charge of the Federation’s flag ship, everything was fairly smooth. I still don’t think Kirk would EVER respond to “I hope you know what you’re doing” with “So do I”–unless it was with that Shatner smirk. However, even if he continues to grow into the part, Pine (nor barely anyone else) will never be able to evince that Shatner swagger.

I thought the guy playing Bones was pretty damn good, though. Really nailed it.

  • Toby Clark

    Sorry, I meant Chris Hemsworth.
