Monster of the Day #3649

The monster to revisit this week is Count Orlok, the barely (and legally indistinguishable) stand-in for Dracula in 1922 seminal Nosferatu. I’ve said that roughly 90% of horror movie tropes originated from this film and 1919’s The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Moreover, the film isn’t just historically important, it’s also a great watch.

David Eggers (The Witch, The Northman) is one of the few directors I really am interested in these days, and his version of Nosferatu (the third) comes out on Christmas. I will definitely go see it, probably this weekend. In preparation, I will watch the two earlier versions. I already owned (surprised) the spiffy Kino Lorber Blu Ray for the original, but I had to buy the remake by Werner Herzog and starring Klaus Kinski as the titular vampire. Like in the fanciful and fun Shadow of a Vampire, Herzog hired a real vampire to play the screen on.

I haven’t seen that version yet, but I will before going to see the Eggers version. For those who can abide dubbed versions, the English language dub of that one can be found on Amazon Prime.
