I was very excited at the time. I’ve always loved sea movies, and obviously particularly loved sea monster movies. Godzilla is great, always, but when he comes up out of the water…c’mon.
So I was excited in the ’80s when they announced a whole run of rival sea monster movies. The Abyss, Leviathan (a second-rate The Thing, as it turned out, which I positively disliked), etc. And today’s feature, DeepStar Six. And I really didn’t particularly like any of them. It was pretty disappointing. DeepStar I found, as the kids say, kind of mid. Still, the monster is cool. (Although it’s another reminder of my theory that society stopped caring about monsters when they were no longer human enough to emphasize with.)
I’d say the best of that era’s Sea Monster movies is Deep Rising, although that came out about a decade later and is certainly no classic. It’s fun, though.
