Japan seems to me to be a conflicted country when it comes to women. On the one hand, as late as World War II the soldiers of that country were establishing rape camps in their conquered nations. (One among many atrocities, mostly unacknowledged to this day.) However, Japanese horror cinema–and folklore–is rife with the ghosts of woman, many raped and killed in life, who seek revenge on men from beyond the grave. Until I see otherwise, I’m going to assume The Bride of Hades, aka The Peony Lantern (1968), is one of those. In any case, it’s the third and final film found in the Daiei Gothic set I’ve been talking about this week.
I hope everyone have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Enjoy your weekend. Watch something stupid.
