Monster of the Day #3620

So we ended Sunday watching The Assassination Bureau, a movie I remember watching with my Mom when I was a kid. It’s got a real (Emma Peel) Avengers vibe–certainly helped by the fact that Diana Rigg is the female lead–but with more dark humor. It’s set just before World War I and stars Oliver Reed at his suavest and Telly Savalas, and it’s basically the (John Steed) Avengers meets Those Daring Young Men and Their Flying Machines. It’s currently on Amazon Prime and I heartily endorse giving it a watch.

Monday we started with another Chinese wacky movie I recently bought called Demon’s Baby. Honestly, I don’t remember much about this, but that it’s a period piece with (of course) martial arts and black magic. I’ll have to give this another look some day.

Even though she's not a monster, I would have rather seen Diana Rigg rather than this!

  • KeithB

Just checked Wikipedia about this. It was based on a posthumously published novel by Jack London (!).

Thanks! Going to have to check out 'TAB'. And 'DB', I developed a taste for whacky Chinese monster movies from the 'Mr. Vampire' series.

  • The Rev.

This was a fun time, if a bit slow to get going. Just don't expect another Mr. Vampire here because that series is really an exemplar of the genre. As are the Chinese Ghost Story movies, if you haven't seen those.

  • Gamera977

Thanks Rev! And yes I have the 'Chinese Ghost Story' films on DVD, they're a lot of fun.

I saw Chinese Erotic Ghost Story I & II at the Music Box theater one time. It had more boobs.

  • Gamera977

Not sure if I want to try that one or not. I like boobs as much as the next guy but some of the Asian stuff is a little too naughty for my taste,

  • Ken_Begg

I don't remember those being that extreme (I also saw Realm of the Senses at the Music Box, and believe me, that one you probably don't want to see.) I remember these being pretty vanilla, but I haven't seen them in a long, long time.

  • Gamera977

Thanks Ken, I think I'll give 'em a shot!

  • Ken_Begg

I know Shout Factory just put them out in a set.

  • Gamera977

Oh cool, will check those out. I'm seeing a boatload of different versions on Ebay. The SF ones are probably better quality.

  • Ken_Begg

They're in a set called Golden Harvest: Supernatural Shockers, along with Sex & Zen, Doctor Vampire and Robotrix.

  • Gamera977

Thanks Ken, Deep Discount DVDs had it on sale so I just went ahead and ordered it. I've seen 'Dr. Vampire' and it's hilarious. And 'Robotrix' is a load of fun except for the rape scenes, that's one of the reasons I'm a little queasy about Hong Kong sex comedies…

I hear you! I dearly love Death Wish III, but have never shown it at a Fest or a Watch Party because of the rape scene (and between two future celebrities, to boot). Ah, the 80s.
