Monster of the Day #3516

So…there was a minor cascade of minorly bad decisions that led to the next movie. I had originally planned to show an outright classic movie, one of the very best and one of my very favorites. However, the allure of Halloween was strong and I decided fairly shortly before the Fest to shelve that movie and show a classic horror movie, to wit Night of the Demon (aka Curse of the Demon). Then during the Fest I realized Day of the Beast was a devil movie, and I worried that two devil movies in a row wouldn’t work. Another dumb decision was that I didn’t pack my original classic as a back-up. Better safe than sorry, always.

Instead, I decided to show my spiffy new Blu Ray copy of The Magic Crystal. I had seen the trailer, which made it look like Hong Kong’s version of Pod People. Plus the young Cynthia Rothrock was in it, fighting Richard Norton as an evil Russian. You can see why I thought that might fly.

It certainly wasn’t terrible, but it was a double rather than a home run, and I could have done better. It was (unsurprisingly) made by the same company that made Righting Wrongs, another Hong Kong actioner starring Rothrock, which I had shown people the day before. (The Rev LOVES Rothrock, which I’m certainly not questioning.) The films were pretty good if not great, but shared similar faults. Mostly this was a question of pacing; each could have been tightened up a goodly amount. Especially Magic Crystal. When it finally got to the Trumpy stuff it was pretty great. Sadly, that didn’t happen for like 40 or 50 minutes.

So if you want a GREAT Rothrock Hong Kong film, I’ll still suggest buying the marvelous Millionaire’s Express with Sammo Hung, even if she’s in it less.

Again, not a disaster by any means, but I should have done better. Lesson learned.

Have a great weekend, everyone! (It’s NOVEMBER already!!!!!) Watch something stupid. Watch Party next week.

  • As I recall, Millionaire's Express was pretty good.

  • Off Topic: Toho has green lit a sequel to Godzilla Minus One. Takashi Yamazaki is wearing all the hats he should.

Tonight's blue-ray feature was Criterion's release of "Robinson Crusoe on Mars," (which, honestly, sounds like an audience prompt for an improv comedy group).

Never the less, it's a very satisfying picture. Roughly the first half is a "survival on a (kind of) hostile planet" and it's handled fairly realistically (given what we knew–or hoped we knew–about Mars at the time).

Then the aliens show up, and it gets a lot more pulpy. It's a bit jarring, but I like this part too. For one thing, the alien spaceships (cousins from The War of the Worlds) move like they've never heard of inertia, and it looks awesome. I'm guessing an optical printer, but either way it's so weird and odd that it works anyway

As usual with Criterion, the image and sound are great. "Mona…she know!"

  • Gamera977

Ya know it's weird but I've never seen this. Looks like another one I'll have to put on my list along side 'Fiend Without a Face' for the next Criterion sale…

Speaking of stupid I did watch '13 Ghosts' and 'The Ghost and Mr. Chicken' this week. Funny, I really enjoyed them, a nice palate cleanser from more serious films.

  • The Rev.

It was pretty fantastic. Sammo Hung vs. Cynthia Rothrock alone would've been worth the price of admission, but I can safely say the whole thing was a home run for the group that saw it earlier this year. As a bonus, I was personally delighted when I recognized Yukari Oshima, who is probably best known for her role as Yomi in The Story of Ricky.

  • Beckoning Chasm

Actually, Barnes and Noble has Criterion stuff for half price now.

  • The Rev.

Chad R. and I would both be very happy being Cynthia Rothrock's husband.

I was in the minority here, because this was one of my favs of the weekend. Watari the Ninja Boy was pretty much the winner of the Fest for most, myself included, but I'd put this right up there in the running with Day of the Beast and Fiend Without a Face. Probably not a surprise; my tolerance for this kind of wacky trainwreck is much higher than most folks' (Ken in particular). My absolute love for Attack of the Supermonsters is well established, after all.

  • Gamera977

    Ohhhhhhh, thanks!!!

The original 13 Ghosts is a riot, and one of my favorite films of all time. Margaret Hamilton is amazing in every scene she appears in. And the ghost effects were amazing for the time and (I imagine) low budget for the film.

  • Gamera977

Did people actually watch the film with the anti-ghost filter up? They're the best part of the film!

  • Gamera977

BTW: Godzilla Minus One out on DVD/Blu-Ray 11/19/24!!!!

  • Ken_Begg

Fantastic news. A no brainer, but fantastic news.

Now we just need that Godzilla vs Gamera movie.

  • Ken_Begg

I'll be writing this up at some point, but next year's Monster Bash Film Fest in Canton in August is dedicated to ghost movies. Both of those will be playing.

  • Ken_Begg

No, this wasn't one of those "so wacky I become weary" movies (and neither was Watari, which was probably closer to that in pacing at least). I just felt it took a bit too long to get into the plot. Ten minutes shorter would have improved the film greatly, I thought.

Magic Crystal was fun, but felt like it was having an identity crisis.
