Monster of the Day #3510

After Vampire Circus I showed one of several recently bought Hong Kong blu rays, Righting Wrongs, This is about a vigilante prosecutor pursued by a hardass cop played by Cynthia Rothrock. It could have been a little tighter, and there are several endings available, but the fights were pretty good and that’s what it’s all about.

Several people hadn’t seen 1932’s Murder in the Rue Morgue, so that was next. Not a great film, not a great adaptation of the first detective story as written by Poe, but Lugosi is going to town and there’s a killer ape. The story dances around the idea that Lugosi is trying to mate women with the ape but you don’t have to squint much to read between the lines.

It always amuses me what a dick Dr. Zaius was. He gives that long speech about the evils of mankind and we find out in his youth he killed two French women and stuffed one up a chimney.

Maybe they tried to pull the Badger Game on him.

I wonder if that movie's interpretation of Poe's story was influenced at all by the, I think, recent at the time revelation in the news that Stalin had a scientist named Ilya Ivanov trying to mate human women to gorillas and chimpanzees to produce a race of super-soldiers or the like? People talk about wacky Nazi science projects but that one was all on Uncle Joe.

  • I've seen this, but that's all I can say about it.

I now want to hear Bela deliver the line "laugh while you can monkey boy".

  • Just finished re-watching The Phantom of the Paradise after 25+ years and have come to the conclusion that it makes The Apple look both coherent and tasteful.
