Monster of the Day #3509

While we were on Amazon, we watched Vampire Circus, which several of us, including myself, had never seen. It’s no Captain Kronos, but as an experimental Hammer vampire film it’s certainly better than their moribund Dracula movies were at the time. I will say the film was packed with nudity–well, the first half hour anyway–to a degree that surprised me. And there were zero familiar Hammer faces (not even Michael Ripper!), although David Prowse plays (of course) the silent Strongman and future Romana and Mrs. Tom Baker Lalia Ward is on hand as a puckish vampire. All in all well worth a look.

  • I keep meaning to watch this.

Now I am going to have nightmares about vampire clowns.

Criterion is having a 50% off sale today only (I think). Their stuff is always expensive (even at half price) but it's generally worth it. Unfortunately their Godzilla set is out of print.

I think it's been on Amazon Prime for sometime. I saw it there years ago and frankly wasn't that impressed with it. Maybe I should watch it again.

  • Ken_Begg

Its worth a look, certainly, especially as it's currently freely available on Amazon. It might not be after Halloween, though.

  • Rodford Smith

Does it count as nude if they're wearing body painr? :-)

  • zombiewhacker

I tried watching it on Prime some time ago and bailed after the first half hour or so. 70s Hammer Film for the most part was a pale shadow of what it had been in the 50s and 60s.

  • zombiewhacker

Well, there was one familiar face — Thorley Walters, who'd appeared in at least four previous Hammer films (the most recent being Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed.)

  • Ken_Begg

I'd say yes, but there's a lot of paint-free nudity as well.

  • If we are being super picky, this is Dave Prowse's 3rd outing with the studio, although the first (only) one where you can see his face.
