Monster of the Day #3534

I have to admit, I don’t remember much about this one. Were there (stock footage) dinosaurs in it, or is this a really out there interpretation of the Night of the Blood Beast suit used as the film’s “monster.” I do know I was never the world’s biggest Robert Vaughn fan, and even as a kid I thought the suave actor was an odd choice to play a caveman (or a rebel). It’s sort of like when they cast George Hamilton to play Evel Knievel.

I’m pretty sure that girl’s swimsuit was painted on later. And I’m sure he painted in every tiny bit of her butt that the censors of the day would allow.

Happy Friday, everyone. Watch something stupid this weekend.

That's long been my theory about that swimsuit as well. I'm sure the guy enjoyed painting it. I think I've only seen the film itself in its MST3K version.

Put down the spear Eagah, I ain't in this picture

Tonight's blue-ray feature was Greydon Clark's "Without Warning." Never before have so many Oscar winners and B-movie stalwarts have been gathered together into a single film. You name 'em, they're here. And it's a pretty entertaining flick, with Kevin "Predator" Hall being a predator. The Kino disk is pretty good, color levels and blacks look great, the opening stuff looks a bit soft, but what do you want with a Greydon Clark film, perfection? Ha!

It would be hard to outdo the "The Oscar" but worth trying.

As far as horror movies go, I would say that The Sentinel wins the movie star lottery. What a cast.

Saturday's blue-ray feature is "The Pit" from Kino Lorber. Image and sound are absolutely great. Extras are kind of cool as well, nice to see Jamie and his babysitter as adults discussing the film. As for the film itself, it's a triple feature in a single film. To wit–
Film 1: "Jamie is a Sex Pervert." (Which is the story of every 12-year old boy, am I right ladies.) Really, that's it. He's every 12 year old boy since 12 year old boys were invented. He's obsessed with sex. Though, none of the other 12 year old boys had–
Film 2: "Teddy the Stuffed Monster." Teddy is a teddy bear who speaks to Jamie (in Jamie's voice) and tells him to be a pervert and commit crimes. Aside from one scene, Teddy does not interact at all with movie 3, which is–
Film 3: "The Creatures from the Pit." Cannibal troglodytes…okay…trolologs. This is the source of pretty much all the drama for the film, as the creatures are the only agents that push the plot along. They're almost adorable in a "Critters" type of way. As RLM noted, when they make their move the film turns into a Don Dohler movie.
As mentioned, the BR disc is absolutely beautiful looking. Why not give it a shot. Why not sneeze Rose Selavy?

Odd question time, but does anyone her ever remember seeing a made for TV movie framed as a 'special news broadcast' called Special Bulletin from 1983? I vaguely recall it, but checking out a review makes it sound so underhanded and manipulative in its writing I don't see how anyone could take it seriously.

Long story short, anti-nuke terrorists build a nuke and plan to set it off in Charleston unless the USA gets rid of all of its nuclear weapons now. As in, right now, this very moment. The government rather unsurprisingly refuses, the film wants us to be on the side of the terrorists(!), and everything is made to serve the sermon at the expense of any sort of believability.

I can only suppose it must have been awful, else I would have been lectured on how timely and brave it all was my next school day.

  • Without Warning is a damn fine flick.

I saw part of Without Warning years ago. I mostly remember it for the scene where Corporal Agarn — well, a character played by his actor Larry Storch — get killed by the monsters.

That was pretty standard, partly to make the swimsuit / costumes look as skintight as possible. The tradition carried over to comic books. Artist Jim Mooney, for example, famously penciled Supergirl and Ms. Marvel (yes, the original version of the current Captain Marvel was once gasp sexy) in the nude, and the inker would add the costumes. So it's pretty likely here.

  • Ken_Begg

Well, The Oscar (and The Swarm) were big budget studio films. You have to judge the little guys a bit differently.

It is pretty good, actually. Kino has also lately put out a nice blu ray of The Boogens, also well worth looking at. Several times a year Kino has big sales at their site and a lot of their stuff sells as cheap as $10. You might want to join their mailing lists, because they have lot of really interesting films available, great and bad.

  • The Rev.

I'm making a mental note on those two. They're personal favs of mine, The Boogens in particular.

  • I love Robert Vaughan, but yeah, he is absolutely woefully miscast here as a 35 year-old teenager.

  • Gamera977

Yeah I didn't get the film. The whole Jamie is a perv, um more so than any 12 year old boy??? I mean I didn't get the next door neighbor to expose herself but still….

And Bgbear as a monster was kinda weird and then the troglodytes… It's like three movies smooshed together…..

  • Ken_Begg

Not to shock you, but I have the disc, and the film looks pretty sweet.

  • The Boogens is another good one, but it would have helped if it was more a Monster Movie and less a Slasher flick. Also if they had more than one prop for the creatures.

  • Beckoning Chasm

It makes up for it with the off-screen romance, though.
