Monster of the Day #3410

Happy Friday Eve, everyone!

Neat! How many movies has monster manta rays? Sinister Cinema had one from the (I think) the ’30s that was a very cheap Moby Dick knock-off. Can’t remember the title, though. And Captain Nemo and the Underwater City, which I think I saw in the theater as a wee kiddie.

Better are the super super cute murderous one that appears on an episode of Ultra Q, and one from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. Any others I’m missing?

“That darn filter-feeder! He’s taken my krill!”

That looks more like a giant bat, really. And maybe it was before the editor called. “Change of plan. The whole thing takes place underwater.”

  • KeithB

“Anybody seen Steve Irwin around here?”

And I am not sure you should be boasting about killing a manta ray. It is as bad as the killer rabbit in MPATHG.

Of course, now we don’t get killer rays, we get glowing blue ones that are the incarnation of your grandmother.

“The Snatchers”. Again? We really are trying to forget.

  • Not exactly a movie, but the Macra from Doctor Who are basically giant manta rays.

  • Beckoning Chasm

The only other manta-like creatures I can recall were those wuss aliens from that wuss movie, “The Abyss.”

  • Beckoning Chasm

    I thought they were crabs?

  • Killer Meteor

“Sinister Cinema had one from the (I think) the ’30s that was a very cheap Moby Dick knock-of”

The Sea Fiend AKA Devil Monster.

There is also MGM’s The Sea Bat. Yes there was two movies about giant manta rays in the 30s!

  • I guess that’s right, I’m thinking of their NuWho appearance in the stupid episode with the generational traffic Jam and the “edgy” lesbian grannies which I admit I’ve never watched again as I have little patience with the Martha Jones run. I thought that they looked like CGI mantas with claws, but I guess they were originally crab critters. I also probably made them cooler in my memory than they were (as you do). The Macra Terror I’ve only ever listened to on audio, since it’s a missing episode.

Sweet! And Sea Bat is on YouTube! Thanks!

And you are correct about Devil Monster. I kept thinking Devil Fish, which I knew wasn’t right because it’s the alternate title of Monster Shark. So thank you.

  • The Rev.

Episode 7 of “Johnny Sokko and his Giant Robot” featured Ikageras/Scalion, a ray-like monster that spewed acid around. It’s not quite as ray-like as Bostang from “Ultra Q” but you take what you can get, I suppose.

    Bostang: Cutest Monster Ever!

    Eeep!

  • Lords of the Deep looks to have something manta looking attacking people.
