Monster of the Day #3496

So, after Horror of the Monster Blood or whatever, it was time for shorts (Sandy likes music videos). We also watched a Chargeman Ken episode, these crazy five-minute old animes. They are all on Crunchyroll, but a bunch are on YouTube too. They are a hoot, check ’em out. They are good to throw on if you have like ten minutes before you need to leave for work.

On to Chad R’s traditional quiz. This time it was 26 stills of films A-Z. To my surprise, I won handily, only blowing the last one, because I thought the movie Zodiac, which I barely remembered (it was the ‘Z’ movie, that was the clue) was Zodiac Killer. So that was a tiny bit annoying, but still, 25 out of 26. I was well ahead of the Rev’s second place finish, but since I have enough stuff–to say the least–I forwent choosing something from Chad’s fab array of prizes. I am right now looking at the awful El Santo figure I won for a previous quiz, though.

I think my favorite still was Urban Cowboy for ‘U’, because it didn’t feature John Travolta (the picture featured Scott Glenn), which might have made it too obvious. Or maybe not, as I think I was the only one who got The Year of Living Dangerously and that still had Mel Gibson in it so who knows.

Then it was off for a Texas BBQ dinner, which obviously was pretty great. I got brisket, which is my standard choice, and was well pleased.

Back for the night shift. We started with Mario Bava’s lovely Hercules in the Haunted World, which features Christopher Lee as the bad guy. Sadly, he didn’t provide his voice to any of the three (!) versions found on the neato Kino two-disc set for the movie. Italian films were generally recorded MOS, and Lee famously thought (I’m not arguing) that if he was providing two performances, he should be paid for two performances. That’s why so many of his Euro films don’t feature Lee in the English dub. Even so, as you’d expect, that was a disappointment. I’d even Lee act in German (last year’s Krimi; apparently cheap German films–surprise–were more technically competent and thus could record dialog during filming) and French, so it would have been fun to hear him thesp in Italian. Oh, well, great movie nonetheless.

Happy Friday, everyone. Looks of theater action this week. (And I hadn’t even realized Crossroads (!!!!!) played in theaters last week, because Britney Spears has a new book out.) Nightmare Before Christmas is back in theaters, and always worth a look. Miyazaki’s masterpiece Spirited Away, arguably the greatest animated film ever, is playing in both dubbed and subtitled versions. I STRONGLY recommend this to any movie fan. Check out Fathom Events for details. Nov 1 (next Wednesday, I believe) Godzilla 2000 will be back in theaters for a day. And for people interested in a more recent anime film, Suzume is back in theaters for a week.

Halloween is nearly upon us! The Weekend is here! Watch something stupid–or just a classic old horror movie!

  • The Rev.

I actually got third, because whoever got second took one of the two prizes I was torn between, which made my choice so much easier. (I ended up with a stuffed facehugger and it’s wonderful.)

I hadn’t seen this particular Hercules movie, and I have to say it’s one of the better ones. Obviously it’s the best-looking because Bava, but it clicks along, has some good performances, and is just a breezy watch.

  • My can’t work because COVID movie watching days hit its nadir today with Mother May I Sleep With Danger which I played in the background while I cleaned and decorated for my annual Hallowversary party tomorrow. I was pleasantly surprised that the heroine actually takes agency in her own escape, but really just a run of the mill Lifetime potboiler that wouldn’t be remembered (or gotten a 2023 remake) had it not had Tori Spelling unsuccessfully trying to break out of her 90210 image, by making a movie that could have easily been a plot arc in 90210.

I decided to watch a guilty pleasure–“Night of the Demons” with Linnea Quigley, a tube of lipstick, a kick-ass opening credits sequence, and the crudest character I’ve ever seen in a movie (Stooge). I have it on 4K because reasons.

  • kgb_san_diego

    Two reasons, would that be?

  • Beckoning Chasm

At least two, yes. Linnea met and married makeup guy Steve Johnson on this set, so I’m not the only one.

  • That is a good movie. Well, on a certain standard of good.

Watching the Bela Lugosi “Dracula” in 4K. Looks great, lots of atmosphere, though some of the scenes look a bit stage-bound. A couple of observations–1–the graphic behind the opening credits looks a lot like the Batman logo. Bob Kane, caught red-handed again. 2-Dwight Frye is the original Crispin Glover. Shame Glover was never cast as Renfield. He might have found the damn corkscrew.

  • When I was a kid, I found Dracula dull. I’ve watched it recently and my opinion of it has improved quite a bit. It’s not as good as Frankenstein, but it’s definitely watchable.

  • Ken_Begg

Well, plus the absolutely hilarious title.
