Monster of the Day #3386

Pulp covers! Neat! Cover story by the well known German author Manly Wade Wellman.

One thing that is very evident about the German sci-fi pulps is that they are *much* less likely to incorporate a sexy female on the cover. I guess in a country that had actual porn you didn’t need that sort of stuff as much.

Happy Thursday, everyone.

The one with the camera…she was driving, right?

  • Actual porn on plain old broadcast TV when I lived there in the 90s. Usually on Thursday and Saturday nights. Mostly soft(ish) core, but the weird voyeur travel news-y shows (I particularly recall one called ‘Peek’ that I would occasionally bump my eyes on which channel hopping) would just roll with whatever was going on in the background of whatever brothel/sex club the hostess was visiting/promoting that week. I lived in (more conservative and very Catholic) Bavaria where the sex trade was generally fairly discrete (by German standards), but some places up north had some very disturbing districts, Frankfurt in particular.

We did sometimes see hookers on rollerblades who wore red bicycle lights. Seriously odd.

Scott of the Antarctic. Beware of lions and giant penguins.

I wonder which translated to German Wellman story this is?

  • Eric Hinkle

I’ve never gotten a description about the German red light districts before, so thanks for that. I was one warned by a far-traveling friend that the ones in the Netherlands and some Eastern European countries are very nasty places to visit.

  • Augsburg, where I lived, theoretically had a small (like couple blocks) red light district, but I never actually ran across it. I did know where two brothels were, but both were in otherwise respectable residential neighborhoods and looked like all the other houses save for the red lights outside. There were also some girls who worked out of red light vehicles in the parking lot of the local Garden Center.

I will point out that this was 25 years ago and I have no idea what things are like now.

It’s a legal business there so take that for what you will, but there is still a horrifying amount of trafficking involved, primarily from Eastern Europe and Asia, which is why the US govt. now forbids servicefolk from, um, indulging, and it’s prosecutable under the UCMJ, regardless of local laws.

Especially if those penguins are electric. The acoustic ones are fine.
