Monster of the Day #3346 (and bitch session)

Man, that is just a bunch of disconnected Stuff right there, but what stuff!!!!

Happy Thursday, everyone. This is B-Fest weekend, so I might not be here tomorrow. Just in case, have a terrific weekend, one and all, and watch something stupid. I know I will do so.

Went to see the Kaguya-Sama anime movie last night (yeah, big surprise). It only played two days but it got like 10 screenings in the multiplex I was in. I went to the main Wednesday showing in the biggest theater, and I’d say there were 50 to 60 people there, despite it being subtitled. So a pretty good crowd, I guess. No phones or people talking. The kind of people who go to movies like that are actually there to watch the movies.

They ran a bunch of trailers, and man, I got nothing out of them. I have never been more disaffected from Western mass market product. Everything was super loud and super frenetic and laid out all the plot points step by step (was that the climatic line that Ant Man said to Kang, that lays out his whole strategy right at the end of the movie? it sure seemed like it) and generally looked awful. Everything is all jokes and irony all the friggin’ time now, literally every line is said with a smirk, in every damn trailer. And boring Seen It a Million Times mass CGI destruction. Bring the fucking scale back down to human levels, you morons. (And no, I don’t mean “I miss someone so I’m going to risk destroying the entire universe to save them because that’s what love is” thing. God, I hate that too. Deep, deep in my bones.)

Except for the two anime trailers, which just tried to convey mood and seriousness and stakes, even if just personal ones, and left you wondering what would happen in the film because, you know, they don’t explain everything. I’ve now seen the Dungeons & Dragons trailer twice, and although not someone who played the game much back in the day, it was a bit of fun to see an owlbear and a mimic. Other than that, though…yikes. It is such a NAKED photocopy of Guardians of the Galaxy that it made me itchy. Guardians was fun as a goofier sidebar to more serious films. Now EVERYTHING is inferior-grade Guardians and it just sucks.

Sorry, just venting. I wasn’t even mad watching any of it. I was just utterly and completely uninterested, just sitting there and not caring a single lick. Man, thank goodness for anime (or whatever your alternative media flavor is) and old movies, but this stuff, no thank you.

Yeah wow it’s a grab bag! Lady in lingerie, crystal ball, skelly, guy with a dagger. A little something for everyone!

Pretty much just checked out on anything new from Hollywood. Last new movie I watched was “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once’. The only new movies I watch these days are Korean and to a lesser extent Chinese. It’s sad that movies from a communist country are less annoying than the stuff from Hollywood these days.

And the D&D movie. Yuck. Won’t see it in the theater, thought I’d rent it but the recent nonsense from WotC I want nothing to do with it.

  • Since I couldn’t be there this year, for shits ‘n giggles, I’ve been watching along all night with the B-Fest lineup (at least as listed on the website, usually there are some last minute swaps) from home. Not quite the same experience as seeing it on the big screen in a full theater, but still a pretty darn fun time with the Hubby. There was only one movie I couldn’t source digitally at the last minute, and of the rest only one is going to cost me a $4 rental fee from Amazon. We swapped in a Columbo, “Etude in Black” to fill the time as it’s a Saturday morning tradition in my house.
