Monster of the Day #3330

Speaking of, c’mon Haffner Press, where’s my hardcover, two-volume set of Silver John stories? (Yeah, I know, better to get it right….)

Happy Hump Day for the masses, and happy Bofuri Day for a more elite demographic.

Man-ly Wade Well-man? Gee, wonder if that’s a pen name?

  • It isn’t. Some people just get lucky in the names department.

  • The Rev.

I know the internet isn’t always accurate, but from what I can tell that actually was his name.

  • kgb_san_diego

    Well then. Wow.

  • Ken_Begg

Yeah, he’s a pretty well known author. He wrote the Silver John (aka John the Balladeer) stories, probably his most famous stuff, and several of his short stories were adapted for shows like The Night Gallery.

  • Beckoning Chasm

I seem to recall that Planet Stories had a reputation for being somewhat risque.

  • Stephen Haffner

    MWHA-HAA-HAA-HA-HA!

  • 🐻 bgbear_rnh

    That uh, rocket looks suggestive.

  • Eric Hinkle

On the covers, yes. Judging by the reprints and collected stories I’ve read (such as Best of Planet Stories, volume 1, edited by Leigh Brackett — great stuff), the stories inside it were quite chaste.

  • Ken_Begg

Yeah, if you wanted that (for the time), you wanted the “Spicy” line of pulps, like Spicy Detective.

  • Gamera977

Yeah, I got my copy of the collected John Thunstone stories from them over two years ago. I assumed the John the Balladeer collection would be out shortly afterward. Guess not…

  • Gamera977

I don’t normally go for blondes but gee friggin’ whiz that Amazon queen has a magnificent pair of legs on her…. WHOA…..

  • Ken_Begg

Well, to be fair to Haffner, they do their books right. (I also have the John Thunstone collection and it’s pretty sweet.) And I remember about a year ago they announced they were going to add a free chapbook of a newly discovered (non-Silver John) story for free to anyone who had preordered the set. Also, you know, I have eight million books–and zillions of blue rays and DVDs–that I’ve never cracked open, so…..

  • Eric Hinkle

Even the ‘spicies’ were pretty mild by modern standards. You wanted some hard-core creepy kinks, you needed to check out the ‘Weird Menace’ pulps. They could get downright disturbing sometimes.

  • Ken_Begg

Are you crazy?! These covers are designed to draw the male gaze! Can’t you see how offensive that is? I think we’ve chased off GalaxyJane, she’s withering on her fainting couch. Somebody, get on Twitter and cancel Eric!

  • Gamera977

Yeah, I’d rather have it right than quick. So sorry if I was whining a little there.

  • Ken_Begg

Hey, we are not living in a society that teaches people the value of delayed gratification.
