Monster of the Day #3327

Over the years the supernatural beings in adaptations of A Christmas Carol have tended to grow more monstrous. Now with CGI I’m sure sure we’ll see many actors in make-up as them again. On the other hand, it’s not too surprising that when you make a comic version of the story with the main star of Ghostbusters that you’d amp up the scary/funny ghosties.

Meh, I’ll stick with Alastair Sim.

Just watched this a couple of days ago. It holds up really well.

  • KeithB

    I’ll stick with the Muppets.

  • Marley’s the only one who needs to be scary.

I like when they keep the nasty housekeepers that steal the bed clothes, curtains, and nightgown. The earliest British version has that nasty bunch.

  • Beckoning Chasm

I watched the Jim Carrey version, and…it’s not as bad as you thought. It’s not good, and it looks like you’re watching someone play a video game, but…it’s not that bad.

I would not accept it as a substitute for the classic George C. Scott or Mr. Magoo versions, but if you can overlook the VFX splurge, it’s decent.

  • Eric Hinkle

They were my favorite part in the Mister Magoo version, them and their song ‘We’re Despicable’.

Something that seems to get dropped from every version I’ve ever seen, with maybe one exception, are the two figures the Ghost of Christmas Present shows Scrooge. Hunger and Want. Maybe they’re seen as too creepy for the story?

  • Eric Hinkle

What about the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come?

  • Gamera977

Hmm, they’re in the George C. Scott version.

  • Eric Hinkle

That’s probably the ‘one exception’ I’m remembering.

  • Rodford Smith

The Mister Magoo version was the first animated Christmas special.

  • Gonna drop in my belated 2 cents with the unpopular opinion that Albert Finney was the best screen Scrooge ever.

  • zombiewhacker

I believe they’re also in the Chuck Jones/Richard Williams animated version.

  • Beckoning Chasm

They’re in the Jim Carrey version too.

  • zombiewhacker

Just remembered, they’re also in the 1951 Alastair Sim version.

  • Beckoning Chasm

I confess, I’ve never seen that version. Though it must be good, Finney being good in basically anything he’s been in. “Corpse Bride” is a favorite.

But having seen the George C. Scott, Muppets, Alistair Sim, Mr. Magoo, Bill Murray, etc, I’m kind of overgorged on “A Christmas Carol.”

But if we’re all still alive next year, I’ll definitely watch Mr. Finney’s version.

  • zombiewhacker

Finney had a blast in that movie. In terms of film Scroogedom, I’d rank him second only to Sim, my personal all-time favorite.
