Monster of the Day #3317

Hmmm. I’m intrigued, but am I 15 cents intrigued?

“We’ve got three different artists working on this cover, none of whom can see what the others have made! So, let’s have a look!”

  • KeithB

Isn’t this just a still from “From Hell It Came”?

My old flame, I can’t even think of her name

  • A very interesting cover.

Look how completely disinterested the girl is over the whole scene. Dripping wet, she seems to have come straight out of the water.

The monster itself doesn’t look that bothered, either. Face full of flame and it just sits there.

The guy with the flame thrower is, of course, a complete enigma, but from the context clues given with the rest of the painting all of this is a test to make sure ole Green and Gruesome can take whatever Humanity can dish out. Blonde is on the monster’s side, and may have well been first to have the fire treatment.

All that aside, real curious as to which story this cover goes with. Neither one of the two listed looks like it would match at all.

  • And now I have the Spike Jones song running through my head….

  • KeithB

I am getting a solaris vibe, that the girl is a fake, sent by the “deadly dust” to confuse the soldier.

  • That does make sense

  • Gamera977

Yeah I’ve attended a demonstration firing of a flamethrower and you want to be back from the damn thing at least fifty feet/ fifteen meters or so. Still the heat washes over you like a wave. I’d think the artist from that time period would be a WWII or Korea vet or know some that would tell him you don’t stand that close to an operating flamethrower…

BTW I went and ordered a boxed set of all the ‘Mr. Vampire’ movies from Hong Kong on Ken and Sandy’s recommendations. Whom I trust… I think. Sandy’s love of HGL did give me pause though…

  • zombiewhacker

Hey, Ken, I just noticed you haven’t done a new Nugget for over a year and a half. Any reason why?

  • Eric Hinkle

Ah, Thrilling Wonder Stories. I remember reading years ago a few comments by Leigh Brackett ‘The Queen of Outer Space’ as she explained what it was like to write for the SF pulps: “First, you tried to sell to Astounding. If that didn’t work, you tried for Planet Stories. If they didn’t buy it, you tried Startling Stories. And if Startling wasn’t interested, you sold it to Thrilling Wonder Stories. The only reason TWS wouldn’t buy your story would be if they literally had no pages left to fill. They were the bottom of the barrel. But if you wanted to eat that week, you were glad to see your writing in their magazine.”

  • Ken_Begg

I can’t imagine you won’t love them, but I’ll rebuy your set if you don’t.

  • Ken_Begg

    Uhhh…look, a fuzzy squirrel!

  • Gamera977

    I kid! I’m sure I’ll love them.

If you do want your own copies it was off Ebay from Hongkongposter. He has another copy listed as available. The set is a little expensive but it is Blu-Ray so I’m assuming they’ve been cleaned up.
