Monster of the Day #3303

Ah, Coffin Joe. Sort of Brazil’s Paul Naschy, José Mojica Marins also ran into censorship issues–especially due to his disdain for the Catholic Church–but his movies are really weird and personal and quite fun. Coffin Joe has a lot of political and philosophical issues, and they are fully on display in the series. These aren’t readily available unless you own the old DVDs, but if you get a chance to watch one, give it a shot.

  • José Mojica Marins pretty much invented the horror movie in Brazil with his “Coffin Joe” series.

Interesting. I’ve always heard but the guy but never seen him. I thought he was a horror host, I didn’t know he was in movies too.

BTW: ‘Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex’ is currently up on YouTube on the “Godzilla Channel’ and it’s pretty friggin’ awesome!

  • Just came over here to mention that. It hits the spot, but I think the Hedorah short was better. That they had Megumi Odaka do the opening narration was a nice touch.

The surprise guest appearance of Beethoven threw me, though. This comment might be lost on a lot of you here at Jabootu, but when that particular slice of classical music came on I expected to see Papa Smurf and his Smurfs being chased by Gargamel.

  • Just wanted to add: A year from now, Toho is planning to release a new Godzilla flick.
