Monster of the Day #3297

Speaking of Japanese Otaku cinema being shown in theaters by Fathom Events next week (see yesterday’s MotD), they will also close this year’s series of Ghibli screenings by featuring what is pretty much universally considered their greatest film–which is saying something. Spirted Away will be shown both in dubbed versions (ick) on Sunday and Wednesday, and the subtitled version on Monday and Tuesday. It’s a wonderful film, if you haven’t seen it, I’d really advocate checking it out.

Also, this is the Saturday when they are showing the Universal Phantom of the Opera and Creature of the Black Lagoon.

Details on the above, and locations where the screening will take place, at Fathomevents.com.

  • Beckoning Chasm

One of the greatest movies ever made.

  • The Rev.

Anyone who hasn’t seen this really needs to rectify that. It might be my all-time favorite animated film and it is pretty much flawless.

Plus, history indicates you will have a perfect cinema experience. At least if you see the subtitled version–only people really interested in seeing the film go to those, meaning nobody’s chattering or playing with their phone. I imagine if you do to see the dub you might have parents with their kids in the audience, but that has charms of its own. (Although that may be more so for films like My Neighbor Totoro.) For immersive reasons, though, if nothing else, I’d opt for the subtitled showings.

As I’ve said I don’t know much about anime but when I had a guy assuming as a kaiju fan I was a big anime fan as well I recommended this and ‘My Neighbor Totoro’ as the best first anime films to cut his teeth on. I don’t think I was wrong.

Neither here nor there but I’m currently painting a 9in/ 23cm anime figure of Deedlit the Elf from ‘Record of the Lodoss War’ for an old friend I used to play D&D with as a Christmas present. It’s a NomNom Figures 3D printed kit rather than molded and the quality is super high- it’s a joy to assemble and paint.
