Monster of the Day #3270

I know we just featured this guy, but man, this picture is so good. I can’t help the nostalgia. Not that I specifically ever loved any of these shows, because (for whatever reason) I didn’t. But I do love the idea that craftsman designed and built this prop for *one* episode of a half hour TV show. Then it had to be maneuvered on wires for what had to be a short shooting schedule. All that work should be acknowledged and respected and, at least among our elite demographic, loved.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone. Watch something stupid. Watch Party next Friday.

The Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot / Dungeons and Dragons crossover never really took off.

The Voyage To Space cosplayers were disappointed when no one recognized them.

  • Beckoning Chasm

Actually, according to Wikipedia this guy showed up in the last episode too, but that may have just been clips (ala Gamera movies).

I never thought of it being a full costume. Neat.

Yeah, I respect the pile of work the FX guys put into the flying eyeball. But still I want to think that if the giant robot punches him in the pupil candy and toys will shoot out.

  • Here we have two friends, chatting between takes. Let’s listen in on some of their conversation. Translated from the Japanese, maybe:

“I can take everything else, I swear I can.”

    “Sure. It’s a rough biz, but…”

“It’s just the puns! The endless puns! The incredible stretches for pointless word play.”

    “The… puns.”

“I could just scream. The same ones, over and over, each time told like they were something new.”

“I get where you’re coming from. Really. But I didn’t think there were that many ways to pun Flying Ro–”

    “YOU HAVE NO IDEA!”

and if I hear domo arigato Mr. Roboto one more time

BTW I watched ‘Sasquatch: The Legend of Bigfoot’ 1977 on YouTube last night. Does that count as ‘something stupid’? Not the worst Sasquatch movie by a long shot but hardly a good movie either…

  • Beckoning Chasm

Or you’d hear BLAM! pfffffffffffllllppppt as he pops and flies around the room, deflating in front of crestfallen children.

  • It was a Bigfoot movie. It’s a rare Bigfoot movie that doesn’t count as bad or stupid or both. Seeing a good Bigfoot movie is rather like seeing Bigfoot, in fact: You’ll have this awe inspiring experience that no one will believe you actually had.

Happy to see this movie getting the love it deserves. Was a favorite of mine when it ran on the WABC 7 4:30 movie back in the day. You think this edited-down version is disjointed (compared to the full TV series)? Try watching it in a 90 minute time slot with even more scenes cut out so they could fit in commercials.

  • Gamera977

Yeah, I watched ‘The Legend of Bigfoot’ by Ivan Marx the other night. And good gosh ‘Sasquatch: The Legend of Bigfoot’ was a classic compared to that! But there’s still a certain amount of innocence to the old ’70s stuff.
