Monster of the Day #3262

Toho briefly had it’s own Peggy Neal, blond actress Linda Miller. If anything, Ms. Miller had an even shorter career than Ms. Neal did, who at least starred in a couple of (admittedly lower profile) Japanese sci-fi films. However, they probably figured Kong needed a blond woman, so they cast one. After this Ms Miller appeared as “A Nurse” in The Green Slime, and then returned to the states for an episode of My Three Sons, and that was basically it. She’ll always have King Kong Escapes, though.

The women get pretty short shrift on all the international posters, as Toho knew monsters were the film’s bread and butter. Notably, luscious Bond Girl Mie Hama gets *slightly* more attention in posters, even in her big Oliver! cap.

OT, but speaking of Watch Parties, we’re coming up on the one-year anniversary, I think.

  • My translation skills aren’t the best, I admit, so I’m probably getting it wrong when I read that top line as “Intense emotions will set your pants on fire.”

  • 🐻 bgbear_rnh

and “The Regrets of King Kong”

regrets? I’ve had a few, too few to mention

  • Gamera977

You guys don’t have to wear asbestos trousers while watching???

  • Gamera977

Most of them involved way too many banana daiquiris….

  • I’ve always loved this movie. Gives Dr. Who a bad name, but still.

  • Gamera977

I always want to spell it as Dr. Hue but I believe it is spelled in the subtitles as Who…

  • Beckoning Chasm

Wikipedia spells it “Dr. Who.” The BBC series had been around for around 4 years by this point.

  • 🐻 bgbear_rnh

    So Who was on first.

  • Most definitely. Dr. Who comes from the King Kong Show and was the main villain. He also looked completely different.

  • Beckoning Chasm

    That’s what I’m asking, yes.

  • Killer Meteor

The Dr Who in the film looks so much like William Hartnell, I’m willing to believe Toho got the wrong picture from the reference library.

  • Eric Hinkle

Wasn’t his name also originally spelled Dr. Hu?

  • Killer Meteor

No. The character in the Rankin Bass Cartoon show that Toho based KKE on is called Dr Who in the title card of his introductory episode.

  • Eric Hinkle

Whoops, my mistake. Thanks for the correction.

  • Killer Meteor

Don’t worry, I’ve seen the Dr. Hu name repeated in several references books by writers who likely couldn’t believe their ears!

  • Eric Hinkle

But if Who was first, then what was second?

  • Beckoning Chasm

    Dr. No. Dr. Ida No.

  • 🐻 bgbear_rnh

    Exactly

  • Ken_Begg

    Groan!*

(*This is another way of saying, You win!)

  • Ken_Begg

Yes, if you weren’t conversant with the cartoon show (although how such a thing would be possible, I’m quite sure I don’t know) it would be a natural inference to make.
