Monster of the Day #3418

After The Uninvited, we watch the extremely fun The Raven, the old one with Lugosi and Karloff. (“I’m the sanest man alive!”) Then the crazy (I think) Thai film Killer Elephants, then the short Christmas Grotto, and then off to dinner.

Back for the evening shift. We started with the Wakaliwood flick Bad Black (super crazy, but maybe a little too realistic in showing how things are for kids in ghettos), then I showed the fairy tale-inflected Snake Girl and the Silver Haired Witch. I really like it, and if you’re looking for something new (but old), it’s out on a neato Blu Ray now. It’s also in gorgeous black and white.

We ended in with the Texas film, which this time was a weird, sort of western made in Soviet Russia. (??) It was called The Headless Headman, but no Washington Irving connection.

Killer Elephants didn’t live up to its name. Still fun though…

Not movie related but still bizarre enough that some of you may be entertained.

In the ‘Now I’ve heard it all’ department, I just learned there’s a North Korean restaurant chain with stores from China to Europe. It’s apparently run by the North Korean foreign intelligence, and sells menu items like kimchi, dog meat, and aphrodisiacs made from bears.

The staff all come from North Korea, and apparently there’s problems with some of them running away from their dream job.

Really the whole thing sounds like the set-up for some goofy 60’s or 70’s sitcom. Hey, Mister Begg, maybe if they open one up in Chicago you can take your friends there the next time you have one of your bad-movie get-togethers. I imagine it’d be a memorable experience.

And if you doubt me look on Wikipedia for ‘Pyongyang (restaurant chain)’.

The world’s a strange place sometimes.

  • Gamera977

I think our local Korean restaurant is run by South Koreans. At least no one has tried to poison or kidnap me yet.

  • Eric Hinkle

Obviously they fear the wrath of Japan if they mess with one of its greatest kaiju.

I also understand from reading up on the Pyongyang chain that it’s staffed entirely by North Koreans, and there’s a never-ending problem with said staff sneaking out in the middle of the night.

As one gentleman I know elsewhere dryly put it, ‘Obviously they’re trying to flee the decadent capitalist tyranny to return to the utopia that is North Korea’.

  • Gamera977

I just watched Godfrey Ho’s ‘Crocodile Fury’ 1988 on YouTube. Thanks guys!!!

    I think…

Well, it had crocodiles in it, and vampires, and a bunch of hot Thai women. And if you like seeing people smacked around by a rubber croc tail this is the movie for you.

The plot- well I’m not sure I understood a lot of it but sometimes you just have to let the art wash over you.

And finally if you really want to own a copy there’s a DVD-R of it on Ebay for eighteen bucks US.

  • Glad to hear you checked it out. You made a random wish, we had access to the Truth, and it bore many fruits.

  • Gamera977

Reading this again I have to wonder what you’d do with aphrodisiacs made from bears.

I’m not sure I’d want to be turned on by female bears.

And if I were I’m not sure I’d survive making love to one.

BTW: ‘Prophecy’ is back on Amazon Prime. Not the good movie with Chris Walken as the Archangel Gabriel but the mutant bear one with Robert Foxworth. Maybe an idea for a watch party???

  • Eric Hinkle

    I don’t know, I’ve seen some good-looking lady bears online – !

More seriously, I’m surprised the Norks are permitted to sell products made from endangered species in Canada and Europe.

  • Prophecy gone again. We bearly had time to notice.

At least go for one of the nice Canadian bears. The American ones are all trashy…

So, somewhere on this site I’m pretty sure folks mentioned “Tales of the 3rd Dimension” and “Lady Vampire” (1959. from Japan). Well, I found them, and watched them on YouTube. “Tales” is basically terrible, the kind of movie where Jay Bauman would should “What is happening?” with the authenticity that only he can project. “Lady Vampire” on the other hand, is kind of okay, and even without any kind of subtitles, is still really easy to understand.

  • Gamera977

Maybe I’m weird but I really liked ‘Tales’. I liked the first bit and loved the third. The total batguano insanity of story three kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what the heck they were going to throw at us next. The second story was the only one I thought was so-so.

I’ll have to give ‘Lady Vampire’ a shot- thanks!

  • Ken_Begg

It used to be up on YouTube with subtitles, but I think that channel got a copyright strike, maybe for altering it (i.e., adding the subtitles). It was pretty interesting, I thought, seeing a common western monster through a Japanese lens. There are also at least a couple Ghost Cat movies on YouTube.

I think I might have been put off by the Rod Serling/Three Stooges/Laurel and Hardy host segments. That’s not a good way to start a movie, when I’m saying “Oh PLEASE” to the screen.

  • Gamera977

Yeah, I was like WTH!?!? on the first host segment. And Sterling the Skeleton poking his arm or head into the screen had me thinking was this originally in 3D???

  • Beckoning Chasm

It’s an Earl Owenby production, and he was really into 3D, so more than likely yes.
