Monster of the Day #3400

I mentioned Paper Finz last week (the YouTube Channel that did on the video on Anguirus’ split shell). He has many other giant monster videos, and Gamera (our Gamera) suggested the ones on goofy or, in this case, just neato foreign Godzilla and Gamera posters. So those are pretty great, and let’s do some things on that. Some of these, I’m sure, are repeats, but after 3,000 plus of these I just can keep track. Sorry.

Great Watch Party on Friday. We watched Lugosi’s Invisible Ghost. Lots of goofiest squeezed into that 60 minute flick, although the director actually made the film look surprisingly good.

  • That is a damn fine looking pair of monsters

  • Well. I liked the poster. At any rate.

That’s, what, Gamera versus Gyaos, right? Is that poster actually from Japan or another Asian country? I ask because the art style doesn’t look very Japanese, at least in my less than expert gaze.

  • Ken_Begg

    I *think* it’s from Thailand.

Whatever it is it’s beautiful. If I were into classic movie posters I’d hang that on my wall.

This is the poster to Gamera 4: Truth, a fan-film sequel to Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris. It basically resolves the cliffhanger from the official film. The film’s “presenter,” Shinpei Hayashiya, also wrote, directed, did the special effects, and stars in the movie, and later made original low budget kaiju films like Reigo: King of the Sea Monsters and Reiga: God of the Monsters. The art style of the poster is Japanese, called ukiyo-e, with the waves from the famous Hokusai print “The Great Wave off Kanagawa,” and the monsters done more in the style of someone like Kuniyoshi.

Wow, seriously? I didn’t think movie studios permitted fan works to be shown in actual paying theaters. Thank you for explaining all that.

  • Gamera977

Wow, I noticed the 4 on the poster but never thought it could be the fan film- thanks!!! And though I thought it did look sorta Japanese I don’t know enough about art styles to be sure.

Fantastic! Thanks for all the great info.
