Monster of the Day #3397

Continuing our line of “monsters in posters who look like hobos” we have Return of the Ape Man. Apparently Monogram was too cheap to pay somebody to paint a poster, probably because they spent an extra $500 to get both Bela Lugosi and John Carradine (famously, Zucco is not really seen in the film). Still, they are exploiting that star power for all it’s worth. And why wouldn’t you?

  • Rock Baker

Missed this one because for some reason it never turned up on television where I could see it. And once upon a time TNT used to show all sorts of goodies like this. If they ever ran this one, though, I missed it.

It’s worth seeking out. It’s highly goofy in exactly the right way.

  • Beckoning Chasm

OT, but is Jason Voorhees going to be hosting this Friday’s viewing party?

  • Ken_Begg

    Ha, let’s hope not!

  • Gamera977

The Ape Monster reminds me of the Yeti from ‘Yeti: Giant of the 20th Century.’

And it’s nice to see a middle-aged Carradine. Seriously I’m not sure I can even imagine a young Carradine.

  • Killer Meteor

Zucco can be seen for the first shot of The Ape Man on the table – note the smaller frame and the tell-tale withered arm.

I bet when he faked being sick to get off the picture, Lugosi went “Damn, why didn’t I think of that last year?”

  • Killer Meteor

It got a very early VHS release, then was OOP for decades until the Blu-ray release in 2017.
