In a fitting moment, we followed James Cameron’s first movie with Peter Jackson’s first movie. It’s insane to think that the guy who made the extremely aptly named Bad Taste for like $100 later directed the Lord of the Rings trilogy, a work that at present looks like it might be the last great films Hollywood ever produces. It’s crude and very funny, in that low-key Kiwi way, and it features one of the ten best visual gags I’ve ever seen.

    Yeah, the idea that this is the same Jackson that made ‘LotR’ boggles my mind. Took me forever to find a copy, finally found a guy in a little comic shop that was selling a bunch of his personal DVDs including a S. Korean version of this. It’s Region 1 and in English so its completely viewable despite it’s origin.

    The ‘Lucky me, I got a chunky bit’ is personally one of the most memorable scenes from any movie. I swear it’s makes me ill every time I think about it. I mean you know in your brain that there are two bowls of punch but still somehow it still makes you want to retch.

    I’ve only seen this once, a few years ago, but man it was great. Which visual gag are you referring to, Ken? I must admit I’m blanking on what is probably going to be very obvious in hindsight.

    Weird that you had trouble finding it. It’s on several of those Mill Creek “50 Whatever” movie boxes. Probably a really bad print, though.

    Maybe I couldn’t find the forest for looking for the trees- that’s one place I never thought to look.

    Huh, I got a special edition DVD. I just looked, and there’s a $10 DVD on Amazon, and a more expensive Blu Ray. You can also rent it for two bucks on Amazon Prime. It is weird that nobody’s done a really nice Blu Ray edition. Maybe the rights holders are asking a zillion dollars, overestimating how much the rights are worth?

    And just like that I know. Okay, yeah. As I suspected, should’ve thought of that immediately. I will blame lack of sleep and coming down with a cold on this.

    Darned if I know, this was years ago. Haven’t looked since I picked up the Korean DVD and didn’t look that hard so I guess I just didn’t notice.
