I always have thought simple designs are the most popular. Gyaos is basically a bat-like pterodactyl (with the bat features presumably meant to set him apart from Rodan), and I think the second most popular Gamera foe is Guiron, basically a reptilian dog with a giant knife head. Even his range weapon, boomerang shuriken, sticks with the knife theme. Per usual he completely messed Gamera up the first time or two they fight, and per usual a heavily bleeding Gamera retreats into a body of water to recover. Again, this movie is just peak Gamera.

  • Gamera’s foes always were the most bizarre monsters. Maybe it was because Godzilla, for the most part, had all the normal, natural looking foes. Other dinosaurs, giant animals, space dragons, that sort of thing.

    I sort of wonder if Gamera didn’t have more of an influence of Godzilla than just the Friend to Children Everywhere aspect. Gigan looks a hell of a lot more like a Turtle Foe than a King of the Monsters foe.
