Monster of the Day #3334

Aside from the pretty good Dan Curtis / Jack Palance Dracula telemovie, there was the 1977 BBC production, Count Dracula, starring Louis Jourdan. It’s comparatively faithful to the novel, but obviously short on special effects, and has a stately pace, as it last two and a half hours. Jourdan might be a bit too suave for some tastes, but he fits in well in the Lugosi tradition. On Amazon Prime video if you want to check it out.

I’ve always heard good things about this one.

  • Rock Baker

I can see Mr. J in the role. That runtime would be an investment, though.

Yes, it’s the (mostly) ‘accurate’ novel adaptation for the people–most definitely including me–who were annoyed by how little *cough* Bram Stoker’s Dracula resembled the book.

  • I find this one a bit of a slog, despite its faithfulness. The typical 1970s BBC production values don’t help either.

  • It’s that whole “stately pace” (moves like molasses in Maine in January) bit.

Yeah, I saw a video on YouTube years ago where the reviewer commented not on how good each of the Dracula movies were but how close they were to the original novel. And I believe this one toped the list as being the most faithful. Thanks! Looking forward to checking this one out.

Honestly I don’t remember the original novel being any too fast paced though. As I remember it the last third was Van Helsing and Harker traveling around London smashing the various coffins that Drac had secreted around the city.

It’s one case where most of the movies did improve on the novel version.

  • Ken_Begg

i would definitely think you’d want to watch it in parts, and not all in one go.

  • Gamera977

I watched half of it last night. Was going to watch the rest tonight and then got busy with something else. So far I’ve liked it, yeah it’s slow but atmospheric and moody.

Biggest questions – didn’t anybody notice Lucy’s teeth? Her fangs are quite blatant.

Quincey’s ‘Texas’ accent- um… well I’m heard worse fake Southern/Western accents- a LOT worse but still this ain’t one of the better ones.

And the fruit bat – um is it supposed to be scary? It’s so cute I just want to hug it every time it appears on screen.

  • Ken_Begg

You wouldn’t say that if you were a banana!

  • Gamera977

    Not the fruit cart!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
