Monster of the Day #3305

So we partially watched Witchery, an Italian supernatural demon/old dark house flick starring Linda Blair and David Hasselhoff. I can’t remember why we stopped watching it. Bad disc? Anyway, I was pretty logy that day, so memories are failing. Next I showed Superstition, because Arthur, Sandy’s son, really likes witch movies. It’s basically a far less moronic version of Ghosthouse, and arguably the best of the Evil Supernatural Force movies of the ’80s (The Evil, The Outing, etc.) Sadly, the witch is seldom clearly seen, so here’s the poster.

Lincoln showed up with the kids, so we stopped watching the movie with all the torture and put on Ultraman.

I looked at the names on the poster and thought, “I bet those are Anglicized Italian names” but they’re the actual names of those folks.

So once again we have a monster toting around some young slip of a gal.

I wanna see a movie where the monster picks up some hefty gal and carries her around.

Hero: ‘I don’t want to tangle with that monster. I tried to pick up April a few weeks ago and threw my back out. It must be really strong!!!’

  • Witchery: This movie wants to be a Lucio Fulci movie when it grows up. Not a great movie by any means, but we were coming in off of The Laughing Dead. Anything would be better by that point.

As Chad R. sez, the movie was called on account of Wee Moppets. As it was so thrilling and engaging a flick, no one complained when we moved on to another movie once said Moppets left the scene.

Oh, and it stole from Doctor Who. The opening swirl that happens in late Pertwee, most of Baker title screens? Totally ripped off and tinted red. Points off for that.

While under constraint, we watched stuff like a video dealing with a sting ray pestering crabs, a couple of Sandy’s videos, and, as mentioned, a couple of Ultraman episodes. Ultra Seven, to be precise. Never seen a one before. Looks… Ultramany.

It was during the UltraSeven stuff I got particularly chatty. One thing you don’t wanna do is get an Irishman chatty; he won’t shut up. So I missed most of Superstition. Just as well, as I’d seen it before. Not my favorites, though towards the climax it had some nice stylistic touches. Too bad the actual end ruins it for me with a The-Evil-Never-Dies downer. Oh well.

And that concluded my stay, as it was late, I had a 10 hour drive ahead of me, and I wanted to see as much of the scenery as I could while speeding down the road. T Fest was a blast for me. It felt like I’d been going for years instead of it being my first time there. Really enjoyed it.

I’d like to thank Ken for the invite, Sandy for allowing me into his home, and everyone there for tolerating my presence. If I did anything wrong, seemed rude in any way, it was less do to callow nature on my part and more to the fact I’ve never in my life done anything quite like attending T Fest. Last time I traveled by myself I was eighteen, maybe nineteen, and I’m not often solo at gatherings. Should a next time arrive (and I do hope for a next time), I hope to do better.

Ah, that’s right. That why everyone hates children.

The Evil Never Dies ending was pretty much standard in the 80s, sadly. Partly to set up sequels to everything, otherwise mostly because it was a fashion of day. Cullen, no worries, sir, it was great having you attend. Thanks for coming in, and we hope to see you next year.
