Monster of the Day #3275

As I’ve said previously, I think the stately pace of Caligari and Nosferatu add a genuine nightmare quality to them. If I were to pick one horror silent that comes closet to chugging along at a decent pace, though, it would be the horror comedy Cat and the Canary, remade not too long after as a really fun Bob Hope comedy. (A good double bill with Ghost Breakers.) It’s also instructive to see that even in the dawn of cinema, the Old Dark House tropes spoofed by C&TC were considered sort of old hat.

  • I want to say I saw this one in addition to the Bob Hope one, but I can’t quite recall anything about it.

The Bob Hope one’s a blast.

  • I like silents a lot but this one I didn’t manage to get through. Odious comic relief is odious even when you can’t hear it

Ha, well, mileage always varies with comedy.
