Sometimes you can’t win….

So I went to see Shirobako the Movie on Tuesday. While in the theater I heard it raining pretty hard for a short while. It had stopped by the movie got out, so I didn’t think anything of it. When I got home, though, the power was out. And it stayed out for much of the day yesterday. A lot of areas were hit, and there were outages all over the place. Thanks to the ComEd work crews who spent all day and probably nights–often in more rain–to get most of us back and running.

Then I got up to post a MotD before work, and Imgur is “over capacity” and won’t let me do anything. Sadly, I have to leave and can’t wait around for when it’s fixed.

Anyway, have a great day everyone. Feel free to talk about whatever you’d like here.

Glad everything is getting back to normal. So, how was Shirobako? I saw this on the Fathom events, but know practically nothing about it…

Yeah, I’m glad you’re okay. I hope it wasn’t out long enough for your fridge to defrost. Throwing out a pile of spoiled food is always a pain.

My hat’s off to the work crews, my respect for the guys and gals who work their butts off to get it back on.

24 episode Slice of Life anime (my favorite genre) about making anime. Nominally it features five young women who were in a high school anime club and their dream–unrealized so far–to bring their own creation to the screen. The five ladies are there, but the overall cast of studio employees is gigantic. The series is a pretty good way to get at least an idea of how insanely difficult it can be to make an anime. The movie is about most of the same folk, four years later and after a studio downturn, making…an anime movie. It was pretty fun, but no Liz and the Bluebird or anything. Nice to see all the characters again, in any case.

Wait. So Shirobako is an anime about making an anime? Have the Japanese gotten as navel-gazing as Hollywood?

First, there’s a zillion anime, and they cover EVERY conceivable topic. My favorite show this year was about a girl without much going on who’s life improves after she acquires a Honda Super Cub. There are fishing anime. There are at least a couple of shows about people going to other worlds and opening restaurants (or a drugstore or whatever.) Just…everything.

As I understand it, the pitfalls shown in the making of the two faux series we see being produced in Shirobako are based on issues that had actually happened to some of the people who worked on the show and/or were well known in the industry. There’s also a pretty great romantic comedic show about two kids who start making manga. Hey, go with what you know. And the problem isn’t the self-referencing, it’s the naval gazing. Singin’ in the Rain is about making movies, after all.
