Monster of the Day #3218

Friday night continued with Fly Away Baby, a film from the Torchy Blaine B-movie series. Torchy was, as GalaxyJane noted (she provided the film from the set of them she owned), “Lois Lane who never met Clark Kent.” It’s weird, because we know there were never strong, spunky female characters until the current generations created them.

Finally, Sandy trotted out Crazy Safari, an absolutely insane mash-up of, literally, China’s Mr Vampire films and…The Gods Must Be Crazy. Seriously, same star as that film and everything. Just nuts.

That ended Friday. A night’s sleep and the main Fest began….

Oh gosh I’ve got to see this now. The photo is all I need.

BTW: Sandy really talked up the Mister Vampire series on his YouTube channel. I thought Doctor Vampire was hilarious, is it part of the series?

  • Frustratingly Amazon has *Crazy Hong Kong* but not *Crazy Safari* which I missed due to the whole body-demand-sleep thing. It’s been on my to be watched list for a while.

  • Eric Hinkle

Crazy Safari sounds like a riot. Chinese Hopping Vampires versus Wakanda? (Okay, not really.)

And related to the Torchy Blane series, I seem to recall another comedy-drama series from back in the 40’s that focused on a female character whose name eludes me right now. The best I can do is to recall that she was a showgirl and one film had her saving some doctor in Africa from his irate patients with her stage magic routine. Can someone please help with the name for it?

  • Eric Hinkle

The movie is on YouTube under the title ‘The Gods Must Be Crazy III’.

  • Eric Hinkle

Check out my response to Galaxy Jane. The film is on YouTube.

  • Greenhornet

I knew it was a sequel, but I couldn’t swear to it!

  • Greenhornet

Sounds kind of like Tarzan’s Desert Adventure. That one had a lady magician get involved in taking a thoroughbred horse to a Harvard-educated sheik.

  • Are you thinking “Maisie” starring Ann Sothern?

  • Ken, was “Crazy Safari” the right kind of “show this to a group of friends” nuts?

  • Gamera977

    Watched it last night. THANKS!!!

Loved the giant undead native guy, baboon-fu, and the spirit of Bruce Lee!

  • Thanks! I know what I’m watching Saturday. I have promised myself that I’m allowed to stay home and veg guilt free this weekend, so that’s perfect.

  • Eric Hinkle

That description makes me glad I have it saved to my to-be-watched list.

  • Eric Hinkle

I hope you enjoy it. It sounds like you will going by everyone else’s response here.

  • Eric Hinkle

That’s it! Very good series of B-movies. Sometimes I think the B’s were better than Hollywood’s As of the time.

  • Eric Hinkle

Thanks but no. Blake Matthews just below you told me which one it was. The “Maisie” series with Ann Sothern.

  • Ken_Begg

Yes, it’s pretty good on its own, but given the insanity of it existing at all, it’s simply amazing.

  • Ken_Begg

Consistently better, perhaps. If you like light entertainment, that is. And I’m excluding the greatest part of the B-movie output, which was probably literally thousands of generic westerns. I’m also talking actual studio B-movies, not independent films. Since nearly all of them clocked in at an hour, though, the formulaic nature of most of them doesn’t get nearly as tiresome of you’d think.

  • Ken_Begg

Yes! Moreso if people are aware of hopping vampire movies and the Gods Must be Crazy series, because then the sheer insanity of it as an existent artifact is much magnified. Even so, it’s very fun just as if. You really can’t go wrong with hopping vampires, and there’s a great rhino suit as well.

  • Eric Hinkle

Yeah. It’s hard to be displeased with an hour-long movie of whatever genre.

I also remember someone, maybe here on Jabootu, mentioning that they felt B-actors were often better performers than many an A-lister. Mostly because they didn’t have the classic ‘movie star good looks’ to fall back on.

  • Ken_Begg

Well, there are stars who were, or at least could be (John Wayne) great actors. But character actors, yes, needed to stand out a bit–or in the old days, perfectly fill a niche–to stand out and keep working. Everyone has those guys–Eugene Pallette is one of mine–who make you excited when you see their names on a cast list.
